NEW YORK (Reuters) - A father and son who run New York's Rainbow Room, Harry's Bar in Venice and other high-profile restaurants pleaded guilty to tax evasion on Tuesday, agreeing to pay $10 million in taxes and fines.
Arrigo Cipriani, owner of the international corporation Cipriani SA, pleaded guilty to felony tax evasion in a deal reached with Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, the prosecutor said.
Cipriani's son Giuseppe, president and CEO of Cipriani Inc., pleaded guilty to misdemeanor tax charges.
Cipriani operates some of New York's most exclusive restaurants such as the Rainbow Room on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza and at least two others that carry the Cipriani name, one in the Wall Street area and another near Grand Central Terminal.
Internationally, the Cipriani group runs Harry's Bar in Venice -- made famous as a hangout for writer Ernest Hemingway -- and high-end restaurants in Hong Kong, London and elsewhere.
Cipriani deducted more than $30 million in royalty payments in tax filings from 1998 to 2004, even though for most of that period no royalty payments were made, Morgenthau told a news conference.
Morgenthau said he would not push for jail time.
The Cipriani probe stemmed from an investigation into Dennis Pappas, the former vice president of Cipriani who in July was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution after pleading guilty to fraudulently collecting disability payments.
