Iceland – A spokesman from the North Pole announced late yesterday that Christmas 2008 will be cancelled this year citing “extraneous financial conditions and excessive diminished funding beyond their control”.
The industry, already ailing from last year’s massive recall of toys tainted with Chinese leaded paint, has become yet another in a long list of operations to fall victim to the economic downturn. In an attempt to preserve the operation and what little residual capital funding it has left, the spokesman announced that they have no choice but to commence laying off staff and operations personnel.
Members of the Elves and Reindeer Union were quick to respond, protesting the layoffs and complained that the “Fat” management had not only the duty but responsibility to seek less risky leveraged Wall Street funding and should have been substantially more prudent in extending credit to only qualified clients with the means and support to pay it back. They further noted that should the crisis in financial solvency continue to spread that it could jeopardize other holidays including but not limited to Chanukah and Kwanzaa and could reach far into the 2009 fiscal year and effect Valentine’s Day, St. Pat’s Day and Easter.
Santa Claus could not be reached for comment.
