La Sec ha reso noto di aver emanato una norma di emergenza per limitare alcune tipologie di vendita allo scoperto delle più importanti società finanziarie, comprese Fannie Mae e Freddie Mac. La norma sarà in vigore da lunedì 21 luglio fino al 29 luglio, sebbene ci siano possibilità di estenderla per farla durare fino a 30 giorni. La norma di emergenza riguarderà 19 società finanziarie, tra le quali Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase & Co e Citigroup. La norma di emergenza prevede sia che un venditore allo scoperto prenda in prestito i titoli prima di vendere sia che l'investitore consegni i titoli alla data di liquidazione.

Consumer prices surge in June at 2nd fastest pace in 26 years, reflecting soaring energy costs
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Consumer prices shot up in June at the second fastest pace in 26 years with two-thirds of the surge blamed on soaring energy prices.
The Labor Department reported that consumer prices jumped 1.1 percent last month, much worse than had been expected. Energy prices rocketed upward by 6.6 percent, reflecting big gains for gasoline, home heating oil and natural gas.
