Research in Motion (Nasdaq)

Un articolo riassume i giudizi di diversi analisti dopo l' ultima trimestrale di RIMM:

Friday, September 26, 2008
Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) in focus today.

Let's start with the downgrades:

- Deutsche Bank lowers their rating to Sell from Hold, lowering their tgt to $70 from $120. RIM has become more dependent on hardware sales with time. This means that they have to keep running to keep up with changes in consumer tastes and risk missing numbers if their products do not hit. The company stated they expect operating margins to improve as R&D spend decreases, but also seemed to indicate ad spending would continue to grow. The company guided Q3 gross margins to 47% and expect the margins to move into the mid 40s in FY10. This is well below DB's estimate of 50%. RIM pointed to a large number of new product lines for the cut. In part, the firm thinks this is indicative of their struggle with 3G technologies among other issues.

- RBC Capital is downgrading RIMM to Sector Perform from Outperform, lowering tgt to $90 from $165 for 2 reasons: 1) reduced visibility to recovering margins; 2) increased risks to growth from the macroeconomic environment.

RIM's strong fundamentals (great products, competitive advantages, execution) and momentum
from RIM's pending product cycle remains; However, RIM's thrust to invest in market share ('land grab') " pressuring GMs 370bps Q/Q and 670 bps F10 -- caught them/market by surprise, raising risks to valuation.

Reflecting a more conservative outlook, they are lowering F09/F10 outlook to $11.3B rev/$3.62 EPS ($11.4B, $3.84 prior) and F10 to $16.4B rev/$4.68 EPS ($17.5B, $6.00 prior).

The upgrades:

- Raymond James upgrades RIMM to Outperform from Mkt Perform while cutting their tgt to $110 from $140.

- CSFB is upgrading RIMM to Neutral from Underperform noting that following the company’s F2Q results, they are lowering their EPS estimates by 5%/2% for FY09/FY10 to $3.64/$4.58 and revising price target to $80; however, given that their margin concerns (now evident), are likely to force Street numbers toward their already below consensus estimates, they raise rating to Neutral.

Within a robust smartphone market (expect 2H08 and 2009 growth of 60%) they believe that RIM’s share will be flat globally at about 14%. This lack of share gains is in contrast to recent years and is driven by our expectations for share loss at AT&T in the U.S. (where they believe share is unsustainably high at around 70%) especially given the success of the 3G iPhone. Given this, the firm now projects FY09/FY10 volumes of 26.7mn/40.8mn and expect revenue growth to slow to 53% in FY10, structurally lower than the triple digit growth seen in recent times

On their new estimates, RIMM shares trade on a P/E of 17.5x which they believe is reasonable especially given that consensus expectations may now become more realistic.

The positives:

- UBS is keeping their Buy rating and $165 tgt unchanged noting gross margin pressure now make RIMM more of a top line conviction play.

- JP Morgan is keeping RIMM at Overweight saying that though they advised waiting until after the F2Q09 print before buying RIMM on potential weakness, they are disappointed that the weakness originates not in a temporary setback owing to a product transition but in a permanent step-down in gross margins. That said, they believe this pullback is an excellent entry point into a tremendous growth stock, with the multiple at a multiyear low, even using significantly lower FY10E EPS.

- TD Newcrest believes the company is making a bet on market share at the expense of gross margin. They understand the bet and think it is a smart move. But overall, the Street tends to be short sighted and this explains the slaughtering of the stock in after hours trading following the release of these results. Firm's updated forecast shows slightly lower EPS, but they think RIM could still grow faster than reflected in their estimates. At these prices, they are very bullish on the stock despite target price reduction to $140 from $170 previously.

Notablecalls: Well, RIMM's now below the $80 level I was talking about couple of days ago. Earnings power is still around $5-6 per share. I suggest you wait til Monday or even Tuesday to make some buys

Research In Motion Limited Rallies on Upgrade, Palm Doesn't

9/30/2008 11:40 AM
Handset makers Research In Motion Limited (RIMM: sentiment, chart, options) and Palm Inc. (PALM: sentiment, chart, options) were both graced with analyst upgrades, but only RIMM has been able to capitalize on the bullish note. At midday, the BlackBerry parent was up by more than 10%, while Palm shares are hovering near a fractional loss.
Checking in on today's brokerage action, RIMM was raised from "market perform" to "market outperform" at JMP Securities. Analyst Samuel Wilson noted, "We believe the recent sharp sell-off in Research In Motion presents investors with an opportunity to purchase a high-quality company at a reduced price." Wilson has an $80 price target on RIMM, which closed Monday at $61.73.
JMP wasn't the only brokerage firm eyeing RIMM today. Paradigm Capital trimmed the equity's price target from C$210 to C$190 and reiterated its "buy" rating, while Global Crown Capital backed its "overweight" opinion on the shares. The bullish consensus today on RIMM stands in sharp contrast to a Citi downgrade that was handed out yesterday.
Meanwhile, Palm scored a less-enthusiastic upgrade from Standard & Poor's Equity Research. The firm upped its rating on the stock from "sell" to "hold," and cited Palm's low valuation as the impetus for the move. S&P maintains a cautious price target of $6.50 on PALM, which closed yesterday at $5.95.

RIMM: Deutsche Bank Cuts Target; Sees Bold Delayed

Posted by Eric Savitz
Bold move today by Deutsche Bank’s Brian Modoff, who cut his price target on Sell-rated Research In Motion (RIMM) to $50 from $70 on an expected delay in shipments of the new BlackBerry Bold to AT&T (T).
Modoff writes in a research note this morning that AT&T is unlikely to finish testing the Bold before the end of October, “which makes it likely that the Bold will not ship until November, later than the company expects.” He also says that another new model, the Storm, seems to be shipping on time at Verizon, he says it likely won’t be ready until mid-November and will not offset a delay in the Bold. “That raises the probability,” he writes, “that RIMM will miss their November quarter guidance.”
Meanwhile, UBS analyst Jeffrey Fan today cut his his EPS estimate for the company’s February 2009 fiscal year to $3.49, from $3.65, while reducing FY 2010 to $4.16 from $4.56. Fan cited the same economic concerns noted today by UBS in chopping estimates on the PC stocks. He maintains a Neutral rating and $71 price target on the stock.

RIM unleashes its 3G Storm

By Rob Minto and Paul Taylor
Published: October 8 2008 03:00 | Last updated: October 8 2008 03:00

Research in Motion, the Canadian manufacturer of the BlackBerry family of smartphones, unveils its first touch-screen handset today. Dubbed the Storm, the device goes on sale exclusively through Verizon Wireless in the US and Vodafone in Europe next month.
The 3G Storm, designed to appeal to both the corporate and consumer markets, combines communications and multimedia functions and features a unique tactile touch display designed by RIM that responds like a physical mini-Qwerty keyboard in use.
RIM and its mobile network partners plan a big marketing push ahead of the Christmas season. It is positioning the device to compete directly with rival touch-based smartphones launched recently including Apple's 3G iPhone, Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1, T-Mobile's Google Android-powered G1 and Nokia's 5800 music phone launched last week.

Secondo alcuni RIMM potrebbe essere oggetto di un tentativo di acquisizione dopo che la sua capitalizzazione borsistica è scesa notevolmene dai massimi

8 October 2008
Without a doubt, RIM is and will continue to be a profitable company with plenty of cash, no debt and a bunch of new products (Bold, Storm and Pearl Flip) are rolling out at this very moment around the world. But, that sadly doesn’t mean that it will be able to resist an oppotunistic takeover offer

Hedge funds need capital for feared redemptions. Mutual Fund managers yearn for anything to differentiate themselves from the pack. RIM’s largest shareholders can’t help but hit a decent bid, and in Canada, RIM’s Board of Directors can’t try the “Just Say No” takeover defence that worked wonders at Yahoo! (My how Yahoo shareholders must regret that decision, in hindsight.)
“This would be looked at as a gift” if it came, said the seasoned head of one Canadian sales desk. It would be extremely bad news for the Canadian technology market, mind you, but if you are a PM at Fidelity (35 million shares), TD Asset Management (27 million) or Janus (21 million), and you can enjoy an immediate $700 million market-to-market gain in your funds, right before the end of the fiscal year…you hold your nose and take the money.

Classic signs of a market bottom
Yet among all this doom and gloom, I saw signs of hope. I don't know if Friday, Oct. 10th will be heralded by historians as the bottom of this bear market, a day on which the Dow hit an intra-day low below 8,000, but I think it might be close.
But some of the classic signs of the bottom of the bear market were there:
  1. Capitulation.
  2. Indiscriminate selling, regardless of valuation.
  3. No obvious catalyst for a bounce.
  4. Mass pessimism.
  5. To date, it's the worst calendar year fall in U.S. stocks since 1931.
  6. The most recent bubble, commodities, has now also burst.

Research In Motion upgraded to hold rating by Needham

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Research In Motion (RIMM)
Research in Motion Limited was upgraded from an underperform, or sell, rating to hold Tuesday morning by Needham & Co. In a note to clients, analyst Charlie Wolf pointed to the recent sell-off on the company's shares, which have plunged from a high of $148 in mid-June to their current range of $63-$64. Wolf noted that he put the stock on a sell rating because of his belief that the new 3G iPhone from Apple Inc. (AAPL) would eat into sales of RIM's popular BlackBerry line. "Recent data suggest that iPhone sales are in fact materially higher than initial forecasts. However, we now believe that RIM's share price more than compensates for any slowdown in the growth of BlackBerry sales in the consumer market that might occur in the November quarter," he wrote

BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Tom McIntyre, a money manager with McIntyre, Freedman & Flynn in Orleans, Mass., says that while news events typically help to drive stocks -- or make them bargains -- current news is, at best, confusing

McIntyre does favor Research in Motion (RIMM: News, chart, profile, Last: 44.70 4:00pm 11/26/2008) , saying that people loved the stock "at $140, $135 and $130, but at $45 you can barely get people to talk about it. ... This is the price to take a look."

The new BlackBerry Storm is probably RIM's most important phone release since the first Pearl became available back in 2006. Why? Because like the Pearl, which introduced the business orientated BlackBerry brand to the consumer world, the Storm represents another first for RIM, the introduction of a touchscreen handset with a brand new interface ready to take on the current smartphone darling, Apple's iPhone 3G.
Originally known as the BlackBerry Thunder prior to the official announcement, we received word of its imminent release on October 8th when the Storm 9500 was confirmed for Europe - incidentally, the Storm 9530 is the version to be sold in the USA - and word is the BlackBerry will be on sale from October 22nd.
Research in Motion realise how important the touchscreen interface is and have added their own unique style to the system as well as addressing the various feature omissions which frustrate both existing and potential iPhone users. The Blackberry Storm has its fair share of impressive features and will appeal to a broad range of mobile phone fans, as it's set to be as competent on the multimedia side as it's sure to be on the business side. If you've held off purchasing another smartphone because you where intrigued to see what RIM were cooking up, then it looks like you're about to be rewarded, as the Storm looks mightily impressive.
The Smartphone For Everyone, All the Time.
It's not the first time RIM have made a BlackBerry which will appeal to everyone, but it's perhaps the first time they have packaged one inside such a stylish handset! Style is everything in consumer world and phones don't come much better looking than when they are almost devoid of ugly buttons. It's not just a pretty face either, as the Storm does everything the casual user demands.
Mobile Video - The Way You Want It.
The BlackBerry Storm is happy playing the majority of common video files, including MPEG4 and WMV formats, plus you have the option to stream clips from sites such as YouTube.com directly to your phone.
Music the Way You Want it Too.
It's not just video which can be streamed to your Storm either, as the phone accepts streaming audio too. Like several other recent BlackBerry's, the music player will play MP3, WMA and AAC encoded files and can be synced with your PC via iTunes as well as the included BlackBerry Music Sync software. A 3.5mm jackplug socket has also been added so you can plug in your own headphones.
A Superb Camera.
The first of the features the Storm boasts which improves on the iPhone 3G's spec. The Storm's camera is a 3.2 megapixel item and has both a flash unit and autofocus to take the sharpest pictures possible. The Storm's camera also shoots video.
An Array of Messaging Options.
Aside from the BlackBerry's brilliance at email, you can also compose SMS and, again adding something the iPhone 3G lacks, MMS messages. Another standard feature is the BlackBerry Instant Messenger enabling you to chat to your friends in the same way you would with Yahoo or MSN instant messenger on your PC.
Social Networking on Your BlackBerry Storm.
If you're a Facebook or MySpace addict and love to update them during the day but don't always have access to a computer, then the Storm will make your life much simpler! Direct access to your accounts means it's easy to change your status or add a blog post all from your mobile phone, wherever you are.
BlackBerry Maps and Built-in GPS.
The Storm features a built-in Assisted GPS receiver for the fastest location service possible, making sure you never get lost again. BlackBerry Maps is a very flexible software package which can not only plot a route, but highlight points of interest, bookmark favourite spots or suggest locations based on a search term too.

Enjoy Fantastic Business Tools on the BlackBerry Storm.
Once a business device, always a business device. The Storm may include every cool multimedia function in order to attract those who don't want to use the phone for work, but RIM made their name by providing just about the best mobile office handset on the market and the Storm is no exception.

The Original and Best Mobile Email.
Think BlackBerry, think email. The Storm offers few surprises in the email department, as their tried and tested system is already top-notch. Integrate your office email system via the BlackBerry Enterprise Server which works with Microsoft Enterprise, Lotus Domino and Novell Groupwise ensuring whichever system your work has chosen, the Storm will happily connect with it. The same applies to personal email systems too, either via syncing with your PC or in the case of Yahoo or Gmail, the entry of your username and password in order to set everything up in mere moments. Use it once and you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

Data Connections Galore!
The Storm 9500 is a 3G, quad band GSM handset with HSDPA support for the fastest mobile data access available. GPRS and EDGE are on hand to back the 3G connection up and v2.0 Bluetooth plus a USB socket complete the line-up.

Office and Calendar Features.
The BlackBerry Storm features DataViz's Documents To Go viewer and editor to allow simple manipulation of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files - which can be sent and received by email - plus the comprehensive RIM calender and address book, which are integrated so well into the operating system they can be accessed quickly and easily even when on a call.
Browse the Internet On the Move.
The BlackBerry Storm's web browser is rumoured to be based around the same software as the one found on the iPhone 3G, but its operation is still something of a secret. What is known is that it will feature copy/paste, something the iPhone 3G doesn't, and will make use of the multi-touch technology and special feedback given by the Storm's brand new touchscreen.
Inside the Eye of the Storm.
It's the Storm's biggest attraction and will likely be the talking point all over the mobile phone world upon its release, we're of course, talking about the beautiful new touchscreen. But the screen is not the only impressive technology found on the BlackBerry Storm…
All New Touchscreen Experience.
Research in Motion was unlikely to follow the herd and just add a regular touchscreen to their first ever device to feature such an item, but we didn't expect something as unique as this! Touted as a 'clickable' touchscreen, it's supposed to feel like you're actually pressing a physical button rather than an unresponsive glass screen when using the Storm, which RIM claim makes the experience far more interactive and user-friendly than expected. Will the Storm be the first re-invention of the touchscreen? We can't wait to find out!
Two Keyboard Options.
Unlike the iPhone 3G's portrait keyboard, the BlackBerry Storm offers two different ways of typing your emails, SMS's or chat sessions. If the Storm is held upright as normal, then a SureType keypad is displayed, just like the one found on the Pearl, but if you rotate the phone into landscape orientation then a full QWERTY keyboard appears for faster and even more accurate typing! This is surely the biggest advantage the Storm has over its competitors.

Auto Screen Rotation.

This transfer between SureType keypad and full keyboard when the phone is rotated is fully automatic thanks to the accelerometer inside the Storm. It works well for web browsing and videos too.

A Fast Processor and Upgradeable Memory.

A 624Mhz processor should keeps things moving swiftly along, as will the 128MB of RAM. Internal storage is 1GB out of the box, however there is also a slot for a MicroSD card up to a huge 32GB in size!
Large Screen Size and Plenty of Battery Power.
The Storm's touchscreen is 3.25 inches and displays a resolution of 360×480 and 65,000 colours. The battery, which will be removable and therefore user-replaceable, offers a quoted 360 hours standby and over 5 hours talktime.
