Samsung Profit Rises 17%

Sempre dal Wsj 28-10-10

SEOUL – Samsung Electronics Co. said it earned a record 4.46 trillion won, or $3.98 billion, in the third quarter, a 17% jump from a year ago as solid jumps in profits for chips and cellphones outweighed a stumble in TVs.

Executives said they expect the company's profit momentum to slow in the fourth quarter, confirming expectations of analysts who are forecasting a smaller profit than in the just-ended period.

Samsung said its TV-related businesses will continue to be under price and profit pressure. Also, they said an emerging oversupply of memory chips will weigh on Samsung's chip division margins, which were at their highest level since 2004 in the third quarter.

Following the announcement, Samsung shares fell about 2% in early trading on the Korea Stock Exchange.

But though a profit slowdown is likely, it appears at the moment to be a relatively small bump for a company performing at its historical best. Samsung in just the first three quarters of this year has already earned more money—12.73 trillion won—than in any previous year in its history. Its record annual profit was 10.8 trillion won, set in 2004.

The third-quarter profit surpassed the company's previous quarterly record, set in this year's second quarter, of 4.28 trillion won. In the third quarter a year ago period, Samsung reported a net profit of 3.81 trillion won.

Revenue was 40.2 trillion won, up 12% from 35.9 trillion won a year ago.

Samsung said it set aside 230 billion won in "provisions for various patent-related expenses." A spokesman declined to further explain those expenses, but the company is routinely involved in patent disputes with other companies over semiconductor, TV and cellphone technology.

The biggest improvement in the most recent period came in Samsung's cellphone division, in which the operating profit margin jumped to 10.1% from 7.2% in the second quarter and above last year's 9.9%. Samsung said it shipped 71.4 million cellphones during the quarter, up from 60.2 million a year ago.

Samsung's chip business reported an operating profit margin of 32.1%, the highest level since the fourth quarter of 2004, and above the 30.8% level in the second quarter and 14.6% of a year ago.

But the company's liquid crystal display division, which makes LCD screens for phones, computers and TVs, experienced a sharp squeeze in its operating profit margin, down to 6.4% from 11.3% in the second quarter and 15.5% a year ago. Executives cited weakening demand for TVs, particularly in Europe and the U.S. as weighing on demand for LCD screens.

Samsung's consumer electronics division reported an operating loss of 230 billion won, or about $204 million. The company attributed the loss to price competition in TVs. Samsung is the world's largest maker of TVs by units and revenue. But the business, which is Samsung's biggest by revenue, typically produces the smallest profits for the company and occasionally loses money.
