ATHENS (Dow Jones)--Greece's largest lender, the National Bank of Greece SA (NBG), said Wednesday that it is not seeking a strategic investor, dismissing reports of Qatari interest in the bank.
In a press release, NBG said it is not planning to increase its share capital--reiterating a similar statement from last week--and that recent media reports were "not accurate."
The company "does not intend to raise equity capital, including in particular through a share capital increase on a non-preemptive basis in favor of a new shareholder," the statement said. "Therefore, press reports that NBG is seeking a strategic investor are not accurate."
The Financial Times newspaper reported late Tuesday that the Qatar Investment Authority is in talks to buy up to a 7% stake in NBG.
According to the newspaper, the stake would be worth around EUR250 million. Qatar already has a 4% stake in Greece's Alpha Bank SA (ALPHA.AT).
