VMware said it expects first quarter revenue of $580.0 million to $600.0 million and 2010 revenue of $2.45 billion to $2.55 billion. The current consensus estimate is revenue of $528.4 million for the quarter ending March 31, 2010 and revenue of $2.27 billion for the year ending December 31, 2010.

shares of VMware jumped more than 17% in after-hours trading after the company gave a forecast for the first quarter that was ahead of analysts' estimates.
For the period ended Dec. 31, VMware /quotes/comstock/13*!vmw/quotes/nls/vmw (VMW 49.53, +7.53, +17.93%) said net income was $56.4 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with earnings of $111.5 million, or 29 cents a share, for the same period the previous year.
The company said non-GAAP earnings totaled $127 million, or 31 cents a share, for the recent quarter.
Revenue rose 18% to $608.2 million.
Analysts were expecting earnings of 26 cents a share on revenue of $553.7 million, according to consensus forecasts from Thomson Reuters.
VMware makes software used for virtualization, which allows companies to make more efficient use of their computing hardware.
