U.S. Steel (NYSE: X) finished up 72 cents, or 1.36%, to close at $53.83. Today's trading action came on heavier-than-average volume and saw a sharp reversal in early trading as shares rebounded off a gap down to finish higher.
Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) closed down 5 cents, or 0.07%, to $70.44. Despite the down day, shares of Freeport rebounded from a strong gap down in the morning that sent shares 3.6% lower in early trading.
Rio Tinto (NYSE: RTP) finished up 24 cents, or 0.50%, to close at $48.27. Volume was above average.
Century Aluminum (NASDAQ: CENX) finished up 14 cents, or 1.14%, to $12.42. Shares were down as much as 5.9% in early trading before staging an impressive comeback.
Many of these materials names have been selling for weeks on end and are well off their 52-week highs. U.S. Steel, at today's closing price for example, is down 24.1% from its 52-week reached just last month.
