L'economia Argentina secondo Krugman.

"Down Argentina Way

Matt Yglesias, who just spent time in Argentina, writes about the lessons of that country’s recovery following its exit from the one-peso-one-dollar “convertibility law”. As he says, it’s a remarkable success story, one that arguably holds lessons for the euro zone.
I’d just add something else: press coverage of Argentina is another one of those examples of how conventional wisdom can apparently make it impossible to get basic facts right. We keep getting stories about Ireland’s recovery when there is, in fact, no recovery — but there should be, darn it, because they’ve done the “right” thing, so that’s what we’ll report.
And conversely, articles about Argentina are almost always very negative in tone — they’re irresponsible, they’re renationalizing some industries, they talk populist, so they must be going very badly. Never mind this:

Just to be clear, I think Brazil is going pretty well, and has had good leadership. But why exactly is Brazil an impressive “BRIC” while Argentina is always disparaged? Actually, we know why — but it doesn’t speak well for the state of economics reporting."

Get 13.7% on Argentine bonds, Kolatch tells Ira Sohn audience

Jonathan Kolatch, founder of Redwood Capital, which focuses on distressed credit and high yield and has around $4 billion under management, talked about opportunities in Argentine sovereign debt during a presentation Wednesday at the Ira Sohn investment conference in New York.

“What’s happened recently [in Argentina] has been quite negative and hence the opportunity,” he said, referring to the government’s decision to nationalize energy company YPF. While that is a bad development, it does not affect the country’s willingness to pay its debt, according to Kolatch.

Argentina defaulted on its debt in 2001, because it was in a very difficult economic situation, not because it did not want to pay, he said.

He said investors hate Argentina because of the YPF nationalization. Among other negative factors, Argentina is still technically in default as it has not reached agreement with some of the bond holdouts, he said. Also, the government suffers from high inflation and official data are believed to be understating the inflation rate.

On the positive side, Argentina is a democracy and has no civil unrest, he said. Argentina’s debt levels are also in line with those of Brazil and Mexico, he noted.

As a result, owning euro-denominated Argentine bonds due in 2033 is a good opportunity, he said. These bonds have a 13.7% current yield and there are around 5.4 billion euros of such bonds outstanding, he said.
