ECB's Trichet study U.S. tariffs on China carefully
BERLIN, March 30 (Reuters) - European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said on Friday he will study carefully the decision by the United States to slap tariffs on some Chinese imports. The action follows anger among U.S. politicians over their country's huge trade deficit with China and U.S. threats to punish China if it fails to allow its closely-managed yuan currency to appreciate further. Group of Seven finance officials and central bankers, including Trichet, regularly warn of trade imbalances and call on countries to allow their currencies to float more freely. "You are giving me the information. I will look at it carefully and if I have something to say I will say it after having analysed the situation," Trichet said of the U.S. action at a news conference after attending meetings organised by the Aspen Institute Italia. The U.S. Commerce Department said on Friday it was imposing duties on coated paper from China, reversing a decades-old policy of not applying duties on subsidised goods from non-market economies.
