The yen fell against major currencies on Monday, dropping to a two-week low against the euro on speculation Bank of Japan Governor Toshihiko Fukui will signal policy makers are in no hurry to raise interest rates. The Bank of Japan will keep its benchmark rate at 0.5 percent at the end of a two-day meeting that starts today, according to economists' forecasts. The yen gained earlier after China raised interest rates for the third time in less than a year over the weekend. Japan's currency dropped to 117.26 per dollar, compared with 116.75 late last Friday. The yen was at 156.00 per euro, the weakest since 1 March. Some analysts also predicted the yen will fall to 120 to the dollar in coming weeks. The higher-yielding sterling was one of the biggest gainers against the Japanese currency, shooting up more than 1 percent to 227.70 yen.

Investors are looking to see if the U.S. central bank modifies its current bias towards lifting rates further from the current 5.25 percent. The Fed is expected to start cutting rates later in the year to help the economy, and any shift in market expectations towards a possible earlier rate cut may spark dollar selling. The Bank of Japan begins a two-day meeting today, but traders expect little impact on the market as the central bank is widely seen holding rates steady after lifting them in February to a decade-high 0.5 percent.
