SKY HIGH: Amid the carnage in media, with Independent News & Media hanging on by a gossamer thread, BSkyB is proving to be the star of the sector. Advertising may be plunging, as it is across the board, but the group's subscription model is paying handsome dividends.
The decision to update technology and infrastructure, during the period that James Murdoch was at the helm as chief executive, is paying off handsomely for his successors, who have followed through.
The metrics -- as the media junkies like to call them -- are impressive. Despite the recession the company added 80,000 new customers, an increase of 43pc year-on-year, and now has 243,000 customers taking its premium high-definition service.
Despite strong competition in broadband, it is making real headway with some 15pc of its customers now taking three products -- TV, broadband and telephony.
It would not be that surprising if it sought to speed up this process by acquiring the British arm of the ailing Italian telecoms company Tiscali, although chief executive Jeremy Darroch insists there is no need for an acquisition.

Secondo il Times, Carphone Warehouse, con cui Tiscali è in trattativa per cedere le sue attività nel Regno Unito, «spera di concludere» l'operazione «questa settimana». «Entrambe le società - scrive il Times - stanno lavorando per siglare l'accordo domani, anche se le trattative potrebbero continuare anche nel fine settimana». «Non è chiaro - si legge ancora - quale prezzo Carphone abbia offerto».

LONDON (Reuters) - Telecoms group Carphone Warehouse (CPW.L) is looking to finalise a deal to buy the British assets of debt-laden Italian Internet service provider Tiscali on Wednesday, The Times reported. The newspaper said talks between the two companies may continue in to the weekend. "Carphone has always been clear that it would be interested in Tiscali's UK arm at the right price and Tiscali has to take a decision soon," a source familiar with the deal was quoted by The Times as saying. If the deal goes ahead, it would create Britain's second-biggest broadband operator, it said.
Tiscali, Italy's third-biggest broadband operator by market share, confirmed it was in talks to sell the assets last month, without saying with whom.
The Times said it was unclear what price Carphone Warehouse, Britain's third-biggest broadband supplier, had offered. Previously, Tiscali, whose debt stands at more than 600 million euros (530 million pounds), had held talks with pay-TV and broadband firm BSKyB (BSY.L). Economy Tiscali deadline tomorrow

Carphone Warehouse (LON:CPW) hopes to finalise the purchase of Tiscali's UK assets this week in a move that would make it Britain's second-biggest broadband operator.
Both companies are working towards a deadline of tomorrow to sign the deal, although negotiations could continue over the weekend. Both Tiscali and Carphone declined to comment, reports the Times.
Carphone Warehouse Shares are currently up 2.31% to 154.75 by 9:20am.
Income Tax
The basic rate of income tax will have to rise by between 8p and 10p in the pound if Britain's public finances are to return to balance in the timescale outlined by the Chancellor in his Budget, a leading think-tank says today, reports the Times.
The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), in its latest quarterly outlook, says that, although Alistair Darling is right to assume that the UK economy will return to growth in the last three months of 2009. However the institute indicated that he is still being too optimistic about future growth rates.

Carphone Warehouse (LON:CPW) hopes to finalise the purchase of Tiscali's UK assets this week in a move that would make it Britain's second-biggest broadband operator.

Income Tax

MILANO/LONDRA, 6 maggio (Reuters) - L'operatore tlc britannico Carphone Warehouse (CPW.L: Quotazione) punta a finalizzare l'acquisizione degli asset britannici di Tiscali (TIS.MI: Quotazione) questa settimana, scrive oggi il Times.
La scadenza per la firma dell'accordo sarebbe domani, secondo il giornale, ma le trattative potrebbero protrarsi nel fine settimana.
"Carphone ha sempre detto chiaramente di essere interessata alla divisione inglese di Tiscali al prezzo giusto e Tiscali deve prendere una decisione in fretta", scrive il Times citando una fonte vicina al deal.
L'Isp cagliaritano in una nota si è limitato a confermare che sono in corso trattative per la dismissione della controllata nel Regno Unito.
Il titolo Tiscali ha aperto in forte rialzo e intorno alle 13 guadagna il 15% a 0,4445 euro.
Tiscali, numero tre in Italia per quota di mercato nella banda larga, già in passato ha detto ufficialmente di essere in trattative per cedere la controllata Tiscali Uk senza precisare con chi; ma una fonte vicina al dossier ha confermato indiscrezioni stampa secondo le quali l'interlocutore sarebbe proprio Carphone.
