The upward shift of the yeld curve.
Practical example (please compare the yeld curve at 5th march 2010 with the one of 1 month ago).
If you have observed very carefully the money market movements, you must had recognized an upward translation. This kind of phenomenon is due to (see the my weekly report in the web site Smarttrading). The yelds, from the short term until the very long term bottomed out, nevertheless the European Central Bank, as she had to do something, left the reference tax for the principal refinance operations at 1%.
28 febbraio 2010

Fundamental and technical analysis of the: MOT (Organized Telematic Market of Italian Government Bonds and non callable bonds).
February, 28th 2010
It was a super long term trend change signal (as says Cardwell, in these cases), in interest rates, in Italy.
BTP 15 Sep. 2041 (ISIN IT00004545890)
I am talking about the tops reached by the two BTPs analysed during the last two weeks. Of the two BTPs considered until now, one, the 1st Nov. 2023 reached his historical top at 172.90 basis points in the month of November 2005 and the 15th Sep. 2041 at 106.80 basis points, in the month of December 2009. The trend change, from the charting techniques has been so clear. Two bearish head and shoulders have been showed, lasting, for the first BTP 8 months, for the second 4 months. The price and time objectives, calculated with the long term chart (not yet with the RSI that is more precise) are:
for the BTP 1st Nov. 2023 115 basis points(price target) in about 18 months (+/- 2.0 months).
for the BTP 15th Set. 2041 79 basis points (price target) in about 17 months (+/- 2.0 months).
Explanation of the charting techniques:
There is a long term bearish flag lasting (for the 1st Nov. 2023) from April 2008 until about the next August 2010. Then the flag support will be broken, as the very long term trend, for the italian interest rates is up. The first left leg before of the flag is long (in price terms) 27.90 basis points and (in time terms) 19 months. So we have, from the last relative top (reached in December 2009) at 142.90 basis points, a down leg of 27.90 basis points and a time date of 19 months. This has conducted us to the two objectives (please be careful be cause downtrends can accelerate violently).
The indication, for the position, is to short the Euro BTP Future (in the market Eurex), in the distant contract. I followed very carefully the news (I read the words that Mr. Bernanke said and I concluded that if someone is telling you that interest rates will be low for much time yet, he probably has a direct interest to sell to you something (fixed income Bonds e.g., maybe in order to prolong the average life of the government debt)). Sell all the BTPs you have now be cause long term interest rates will rise, and if you have fixed rate mortgages, keep them and do not change to a variable rate.
Basic suggestions for the analysis: fundamental, technical, cyclical and spectral. In order to begin to study, step by step, the indicator we will try to explain, we do have to read in a very deep manner the tips and hints of Mr. Cardwell, without to forget that technical analysis by herself does'nt conduct to an optimal result; you must keep in mind other kind of analysis in order to confirm the results you have got from charting techniques, evenif you are using very good indicators.
I strongly suggest reading these books and visiting these web sites, study the free publications you can find, first and foremost about the Italian "balance sheet" (you have to treat the Government as a firm, from the point of view of the balance sheet analysis (see fundamental analysis) before to go any further and to apply the Cardwell RSI in real trades, overall in the futures market (see disclaimer).

We begin to state the checklist of the trend, following the Basic course of Mr. Cardwell:
1. The bearish divergence indicates an uptrend (this is opposite to the interpretation of Welles Wilder).
2. The bullish divergence indicates a downtrend.
3. The formula: RSI= (100- ((100/(1+RS))) where RS is the fraction between the 14 periods average of the differences of increasing prices and the 14 periods average of the differences of decreasing prices. I suggest calculating the RSI with a spreadsheet, be cause I tested, very deeply, that the technical analysis softwares make truncation, but if you use the decimals with 8 or 9 decimals, it is better.
4. In the uptrend the range of the RSI is 80-40. It means that it goes in overbought at 80 level and in oversold at 40 level.
5. Typical of the uptrend are the positive reversals (they will be explained next week).
6. Typical of the downtrend are the negative reversals.
7. If the trend is down the range is 60-20. It means that the RSI goes in overbought at 60 level and goes in oversold at 20 level.
8. Typical of the uptrend are Top-Bottoms.
9. Typical of the downtrend are Bottom-Tops.
10. Typical of the uptrends are the bearish divergences.
11. Typical of the downtrend are the bullish divergences.
11. Typical of the uptrends are relative tops and lows more and more high.
12. Typical of the downtrends are the relative tops and lows more and more low.

Come testo introduttivo sulle relazioni tra ciclo degli affari e tassi di interesse suggerisco di studiare "Strategic Market Timing: Investing at Predictable Turning Points in the Business Cycle by Robert Bowker (New York Institute of Finance); 70 Pine St.; New York, NY. 9. Avere un riferimento sui tassi di interesse da tenere in ottima considerazione, vedi i BTP a lunga scadenza (come l' IT0004545890 (gia' ampiamente citato, vista l' alta duration. 10.

The long term trend of interest rates in Italy
Technical analysis of the MOT (Organized Telematic Market of Italian Government Bonds and non callable bonds by Borsa Italiana)
BTP 1 Nov. 2023 (ISIN IT0000366655)
I have chosen this BTP be cause you can have the data since February 2005 and it is important, first and foremost to analyse the long term trend, before to analyse the mid term and the shorter period. As indicator of the trend I use the RSI with 14 periods, following the Andrew Cardwell interpretation, possibly using an index of the market properly calculated.
In order to build the market index I suggest:
1. Build a database since from the yearly yelds (better from prices) of T-Bonds USA from 1977 until 1990 2. Make a chain of these data with the BTP index calculated by Bankitalia. 3. Make a chain of these data with the BTP Future listed on the LIFFE. 4. Make a chain of these data with the BTP 1 Nov. 2023. 5. Make a chain o these data with the BTP 15 Sep. 2041. 6. Obtain and study the yarly, monthly, weekly, daily data, and for who invest in a heavy way in the Bond market, study the intraday, the hourly and the 5 minutes. 7. Study the yeld curve or Interest rates term structure. 8. Read good books on the economic cycle and the interest rate cycle. As an introductive text I suggest reading "Strategic Market Timing: Investing at Predictable Turning Points in the Business Cycle by Robert Bowker (New York Institute of Finance); 70 Pine St.; New York, NY. Here you will find good courses and very good economics and finance books. If you do not find it there try: Abebooks. 9. Have a reference on the interest rate, see BTP (as the IT0004545890 (already cited, be cause of the high duration. 10. Know wich is the Money supply M2 at the moment you have to invest (in Italy).
If we want to follow the studies of Mr. Robert M. Bowker, then we have to write down a very simple equation:
rb + rp = g + d/p
where rb is the return of the bond
rp= the risk premium, g is the appreciation of the stock considered
d/p is the actual yeld divided by the current price of the stock. This simple equation states a relationship between the bond market and the stock market. Reading Bowker, if you have enough time to study his articles in the specialized american revues, you will understand much more on the relationship between the bond market and the trend of the stock market. The Dividend Discount Model is a simple method, for many people very old, but it is still valid. We use it for building the map of the assessment of the stocks with the Bowker method. The next week I will give some more information on the Cardwell approach to the RSI 14 and I will analyse carefully some news of the italian central banker (Mr. Mario Draghi).

A rescue boat.
Technical analysis of the MOT (Organized Telematic Market of Italian Government Bonds and non callable bonds by Borsa Italiana (see:
At the moment it seems very important to keep the money in a safe "box".
So we suggest the switch from a risk-bearer position to a risk-averter (we exited from the stock market on the 18th november 2006, followed by a very small group of believing people, and we got into the bond market.
But as you know the past doesn't matter, for many people.
In brief we suggest the ISIN IT0003658009.
This bond, even if it has a very small yeld it warrants the nominal value and allows to follow the uptrend of long period of interest rates (in Italy).
In the meanwhile the IT0004545890 is the surest indicator, truth telling, of the interest rates trend be cause has a duration very long (a very high implied volatility).
Graphically we have seen, for that bond, a bearish head and shoudelrs with an objective at 99.50 inthe mid term (5-6 months).
In the short term (1-2 months) the trend will be directed by the pullback near the neckline that is at 102.60.
The next week I will try of analysing the term structure of interest rates with the 2023 bonds and we will try to link the equilibrium of the stock market to the bonds market.
We will assess also, not in a very dept manner, the meanings, for the bonds baskets, of the Dividend Discount Model.
