DJ EU Barroso: EU Not Putting Pressure On Portugal To Request Aid PARIS (Dow Jones)
The European Commission is not putting any pressure on Portugal to request financial aid from Europe, its president Jose Manuel Barroso told reporters Friday, amid mounting market speculation that Portugal may be the next country in line to ask from support from its euro-zone peers. "It's absolutely, completely false--every reference for an aid plan for this country. It has neither been asked for and neither have we suggested it. It is absolutely false," Barroso said at a conference organized at the headquarters of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Friday. Barroso said he had spoken to a number of European leaders, including those of Spain and Portugal in the last two days, as well as to the president of the European Central Bank and to Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel, but he insisted that such talks were was part of his normal role. He added the euro zone has put in place all the necessary tools to deal with sovereign debt crises, and expressed confidence that the measures recently put in place by countries in financial distress were "courageous" enough to deal with the situation. -By Nathalie Boschat and William Horobin; Dow Jones Newswires;
