Brazilian coffee exports grew 11.2% in March from a year earlier, and there are signs of recovery in coffee prices, the country’s coffee-exporters council, or CeCafe, said Friday.
Brazil exported 2.513 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee last month, compared with 2.261 million bags in March 2012.
CeCafe expects exports to grow 6% to 7% for 2013, to about 30 million bags, the group said in a note.
Brazil reaped a record 50.83-million-bag crop last year, according government forecaster Conab, fueling a decline of more than 25% in arabica coffee futures on the ICE Futures U.S. exchange over the past 12 months. This season’s crop will be slightly smaller, but it could still top 50 million bags, Conab said.
There are signs prices are starting to recover, CeCafe head Guilherme Braga said without providing details.
Arabica beans accounted for 87.4% of coffee exports in the first quarter of 2013, instant coffee was 10.7% of exports and robusta beans were 1.8%.
Brazilian coffee producers sold 22.953 million bags of beans from July 2012 through March 2013, a decline of 3.4% from the same period a year earlier, CeCafe said.
