Alcoa has narrower 1st quarter loss as prices rise

NEW YORK, April 12 (Reuters) - Alcoa Inc (AA.N) posted a narrower first-quarter loss on Monday as revenue rose and metal selling prices increased, but it took large charges for closing two smelters and for federal health care reforms.
The net first-quarter loss was $201 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with a loss of $497 million, or 61 cents per share, in the same quarter of 2009, the Pittsburgh-based company said.
Alcoa reported an operating loss was 19 cents per share, while revenue rose to $4.89 billion from $4.15 billion. Special charges totaled $295 million or 29 cents per share.
Aluminum, used in automobile and aircraft manufacturing, and for kitchen wrap and beverage cans, reached a peak of $3,380 per tonne in July 2008. But it slumped 35 percent later as the global economy went into recession and has only slowly risen.
Although the metal was selling at an 18-month high over $2,400 per tonne on Monday, it only gained about 3.3 percent during the first quarter. (Reporting by Steve James; editing by Andre Grenon)

The net first-quarter loss was $201 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with a loss of $497 million, or 61 cents per share, in the same quarter of 2009, the Pittsburgh-based company said.

DENVER (AP) -- Alcoa kicked off the earnings season by posting a net loss for the first quarter on hefty one-time charges, but says prices and demand are improving for aluminum products.
Alcoa reported a net loss of $201 million, or 20 cents per share. That compares with a loss of $497 million, or 61 cents a share, a year ago.
Alcoa's most recent results include $295 million or 29 cents per share in one-time charges related to the health care reform law and the permanent closure of two smelters among other items.
Revenue rose nearly 20 percent to $4.9 billion.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, who don't include special charges, expected earnings of 10 cents a share and revenue of $5.24 billion.

Revenue was $10.3 billion, up from $7.1 billion in the same quarter the previous year. Analysts had expected the Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel to report earnings of 38 cents a share, on revenue of $9.8 billion, according to a consensus survey by Thomson Reuters

Al termine di una sessione leggermente positiva per la piazza azionaria americana che ha visto spingersi in avanti più degli altri l‘indice Nasdaq Composite, i riflettori sono rimasti accesi proprio sul settore high-tech. Dopo il suono della campanella infatti Intel (INTC), ha presentato i risultati dei primi tre mesi dell’anno, battendo le attese degli analisti sia sul fronte degli utili che del fatturato.
Nel primo trimestre del 2010, concluso lo scorso 27 marzo, il colosso dei chips ha riportato un utile netto di 2,4 miliardi di dollari, quadruplicato rispetto ai 629 milioni conseguiti nello stesso periodo dello scorso anno. Il risultato per azione è stato pari a 0,43 dollari, battendo le stime degli analisti che avevano puntato la loro fiches su un eps meno corposo di 0,38 dollari.
Buone notizie anche sul versante del fatturato che si è attestato a 10,3 miliardi di dollari, segnando un balzo in avanti del 44% rispetto ai 7,1 miliardi dello stesso trimestre del 2009. Anche in questo caso sono state battute le previsioni del mercato visto che quest’ultimo aveva messo in conto un giro d’affari pari a 9,8 miliardi di dollari.
Indicazioni incoraggianti anche per il trimestre in corso visto che la società californiana prevede di realizzare un fatturato pari a 10,2 miliardi di dollari, più o meno 400 milioni di dollari, e quindi racchiuso tra 10,6 e 9,8 miliardi di dollari, rispetto ai 9,8 stimati dagli analisti. Da segnalare inoltre che la società si attende per il 2010 una marginalità compresa tra il 62% e il 66%, al di sopra delle stime formulate in precedenza che parlavano di un dato racchiuso tra il 58% e il 64%.
I numeri consegnati da Intel questa sera, unitamente all’outlook per il secondo trimestre, sono stati accolti con grande favore dal mercato che reagisce molto positivamente. Intel infatti, dopo aver concluso la sessione regolare con un rialzo dell‘1,02% a 22,77 dollari, ha acceso il turbo in afte-hours dove viaggia in rally del 3,95% a 23,67 dollari.
