DJ Nymex Natural Gas Futures Seen Opening Flat
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Natural gas futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange
are likely to open Tuesday about where they settled Monday following one of
their sharpest selloffs in recent memory.
With fundamentals both on the tropical storm and temperature fronts having
taken a decidedly bearish turn since the weekend, traders see the potential for
more downside from funds' position liquidations.
"We're down on that support area - $5.77-$5.80/MMBtu - and you've got some
cool weather coming in," said George Speicher, a gas futures trader at Dow Inc.
"The technicians have control of this because there isn't any weather out
there."
September natural gas futures appear set to open roughly flat around $5.815
per million British thermal units.
Crude oil futures, on the other hand, were in record territory above $44 a
barrel in overnight electronic trading on comments from an OPEC official that
Saudi Arabia may not be able to bring on fresh supply quickly. But natural gas
prices seem to have decoupled from the crude complex recently.
"The only positive note out there for natural gas is crude, but it hasn't
really been following crude lately, said Speicher.
Physical gas prices are lower Tuesday morning with the benchmark Henry Hub
seen around $5.78/MMBtu, about three cents lower than late deals Monday.
Northeastern hubs are also a few cents weaker around $6.30/MMBtu.
