Forgent Networks Receives Ruling on Patent Covering Digital Recorder Playback
NEW YORK (AP) -- Scheduling software provider and intellectual property licenser Forgent Networks Inc. said Wednesday a federal court issued a claims construction ruling in its case against several companies over a patent covering digital recorder playback technology.

Digital recorder playback is the technology used in digital video recorders offered through digital cable television providers. EchoStar, DirecTV and 10 other companies are named as defendants in the case.
Forgent claims the 12 defendants are using the technology without permission. Forgent said its patent on the technology doesn't expire until 2011.
The claims construction ruling sets parameters and rules for the trial. The ruling was mixed, with some in favor, some against, and some neutral for Forgent, said Chief Executive Richard N. Snyder.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas also denied defendant EchoStar Technologies Corp.'s motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
The company said it expects the case to move to trial in May, as scheduled.
Echostar representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.
Shares of Forgent jumped 6 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $1.57 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock has traded between 32 cents and $2.26
per share over the past year.
