SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Alcoa Inc. /quotes/comstock/13*!aa/quotes/nls/aa (AA 12.55, +0.36, +2.95%) on Thursday reported a third-quarter profit of $61 million, or 6 cents, down from $77 million, or 8 cents a share, a year earlier. Sales rose to $5.29 billion from $4.62 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet Research were looking for a profit of 6 cents a share, on average, with sales of $4.95 billion. The company raised its forecast for global aluminum demand to 13% from 12%.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index advanced 0.7%. Futures on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 0.2%.

Strauss-Kahn intende presentare nell'arco dei prossimi
giorni una nuova iniziativa volta a risolvere le dispute
sulle divise e dunque evitare una guerra valutaria. Lo
riporta il quotidiano tedesco Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
secondo cui "l'iniziativa per la stabilita' sistemica", come
sarebbe stata ribattezzata da Strauss-Kahn, servirebbe a
offrire alle principali potenze mondiali un forum regolare
dove poter discutere per risolvere i problemi di fondo.
Proprio il tema delle tensioni valutarie e degli squilibri
globali dovrebbe dominare le discussioni del G7 che sta per
prendere il via a Washington.
