AT&T accused the US Justice Department of making a “radical and inexplicable departure from decades of antitrust precedent” by suing to block its planned $84.5bn takeover of Time Warner, setting up a showdown between the companies and the Trump administration.

AT&T said it was “confident that the court will reject the government’s claims". The companies’ executives had hoped that the deal, announced last year, would close by the end of 2017, but recently admitted the timing was now “unclear”.
