Il COT (Commitment of Traders) è un comunicato settimanale emesso dalla CFTC. In esso sono riportati il numero dei contratti (lunghi e corti) posseduti da tre gruppi di traders: 1) I COMMERCIALS sono di due tipi: coloro che producono la MP (es. coltivatore di caffè) e coloro che la utilizzano (es. colui che col mais produce corn flakes). Essendo del settore conoscono molto bene la MP in questione. In generale quello dei Commercials è un value investing (comprano quando ritengono che una data MP “valga” quel prezzo e sia destinata ad apprezzarsi; vendono quando ritengono che quella data MP non “valga” quel prezzo e perciò sia destinata a perdere di valore nel tempo).
2) I LARGE SPECULATORS sono i fondi. Hanno necessità di avere profitti stabili nel tempo e perciò sono in genere trend-followers. Così facendo estremizzano i movimenti di prezzo. Solitamente sono dalla parte sbagliata del mercato ai momenti di svolta. Infatti dal momento che seguono il trend sono estremamente short ai minimi ed estramamente long ai massimi. Quando il mercato gira si trovano nei guai perché non possono uscire alla chetichella visto che possiedono migliaia di contratti. Una buona strategia, quindi, è fare il contrario dei fondi quando essi hanno troppe posizioni lunghe (o corte).
3) Gli SMALL TRADERS sono i piccoli traders.
Sono la parte più debole del mercato.
Molto sensibili alle news, sono, in genere, gli ultimi ad entrare e gli ultimi ad uscire. Hanno i peggiori risultati di tutti.

Hopes for investment from the retail sector were also growing with the launch of new exchange-traded gold funds.
Although the general public is an avid investor in some parts of the world, small western investors are less enthusiastic due mainly to the difficulty in investing in gold.
One such fund was expected to be launched any day on the New York Stock Exchange and analysts said some buying in the market may be related to that.
"One has to wait and see whether this demand is sustainable or just a short-lived fashion appearance," Alexander Zumpfe, analyst with Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein said. James Moore, analyst with TheBullionDesk.com warned about near-record net long positions held by funds on the New York futures market, that may be unwound.
"Although we believe this bull run has legs to run, it may well need to see lower in December before higher in the New Year," he said in a report.
"We stick with our view that gold will reach $450 before the year is out."
