BRASILIA--Brazil's budget deficit widened in August, the central bank said Friday, amid slow economic growth and political tension ahead of next month's election.
The 12-month deficit was 7.45% of gross domestic product as of August, compared with a shortfall of 7% of GDP recorded in July, the bank said.
The so-called primary budget result, which excludes interest payments, was a deficit of 1.25% of GDP in the 12-month period through August, higher than the deficit of 1.14% of GDP reported for July.
Brazil's gross debt was at 77.3% of GDP in August, up from 77% in July, the bank said.
