Piper Jaffray Reports Narrower-Than-Expected Q1 Loss
4/15/2009

Piper Jaffray (NYSE:PJC) reported a widened Q1 loss of 17 cents per share, topping consensus estimates of a 24-cent loss. Revenues in the quarter fell 12.3% year-over-year to $83.9 million, but came in ahead of consensus estimates of $81.5 million. The firm's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Andrew S. Duff offered this statement, "We are seeing a benefit to our financial results from the senior talent we have added and from the disruption in the competitive landscape. For example, we have completed multiple municipal transactions for new clients and are achieving significant improvement in our fixed income sales and trading results. However, our global investment banking businesses remain challenged." The company also reported book value per share at the end of March of $47.31.

* Operating loss 17 cents per share
* Sales and trading revenue improves
* Shares rise as much as 14.5 percent

April 15 (Reuters) - Piper Jaffray Cos (PJC.N) said improved results from sales and trading activity as well as cost-cutting resulted in a smaller first-quarter loss than analysts expected, sending the investment bank's shares up as much as 14.5 percent.
The Minneapolis-based firm said sales and trading revenue rose 74 percent from a year earlier and 105 percent from the fourth quarter, helped by strong performance across taxable and municipal bonds, the end of some derivatives activities, and a reduction in junk bond activities.
This helped offset a 59 percent drop in investment banking revenue, and steeper declines in equity and merger financing.
