About the losses in SMO
The subject we avoided for a long time, partly due to fear of what we would find, and partly because of lack of data. But piece by piece, day by day, we managed to bring the puzzle together, more or less precise. We think that the margin of error is minimal.
Regarding Ukraine, we had great help from people who tracked published obituaries of dead AFU soldiers, and we can classify them as confirmed dead from the conflict. The figure, till November 15th, stood at 532.000 dead AFU soldiers and 8.500 officers (included in the total lost). Out of calculation are, of course, those missing in action of AFU, whose numbers vary but go as high as 90.000. Some even count more, but since we don't have the slightest idea how to obtain that data (Ukraine for sure would not give it to us) we decided to exclude them from this text, but we emphasize the significant number in that category.
Regarding Russian casualties, the situation has become more clear recently. Until the November 15th, 78,329 dead soldiers of all Russian Armed Forces are registered. In 2022, the average age was 22 years; in 2023 - 34, and this year - 38. The biggest losses are suffered by mechanized infantry and Airborne troops. Estimates varied, but since the beginning of the SMO, more than 2 million soldiers went through the Russian Armed Forces of all branches. Among 300.000 mobilized men, the fatality rate stood at 3,2% which is quite acceptable for the conflict of this size.
The number of dead in regions of Russia is mostly equal and in proportion to the population of said regions, except Moscow, due to the size of the population. There is no big difference between poor and rich regions and those where the majority is the Russian population or ethnic minorities. The exception is Baskiria, with 3.178 dead, and Chechnya, with only 285. We doubt the last figure since Chechens participated in some big battles, but we couldn't pull out much better than this.
The composition of the dead is divided into the following categories
Volunteers - 16551
Convicts - 14366
Professional soldiers - 14362
Mobilized - 9622
Mercenaries - 2627
Unknown - 20803
The ratio of dead AFU versus Russian Army is with these numbers 6,7:1 which pretty much goes in line with earlier statements of Russian officials. But if we add AFU missing (and presumed dead - 90.000 ) we have a ratio of 7,9:1. No doubt, the ratio would only get worse for AFU since they are suffering very heavy losses in all those cauldrons, not evacuating wounded and heaving blocking detachments.
Despite the loss of lives being big, we can be satisfied since, for 3 years, we have been practically waging war against the entire West. And we are doing it very well. We will prevail. Victory will be ours.
