UPDATE 1-Bernanke optimistic about U.S. inflation-Brazil's Melin
Sun Nov 19, 2006 1:46am ET
MELBOURNE, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told a Group of 20 meeting he was optimistic about U.S. inflation, Brazil's Secretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Luiz Melin said on Sunday.

"Mr Bernanke was optimistic about inflation in America," Melin told a briefing after a two-day meeting of finance ministers and central bankers ended.

Melin also said European Central Bank (ECB) President Jean-Claude Trichet told the meeting that while the ECB could not afford to be complacent about inflation, Trichet was "very happy" about it.

"Mr Jean-Claude Trichet also mentioned that as far as the ECB was concerned, while they cannot afford to be complacent, they were also very happy about that (inflation)."

Melin said there was a consensus among central bankers that the concerns about inflation were not as dramatic as characterised by some analysts in recent months.

Melin also said there were no immediate concerns about rising inflation in Bra

MELBOURNE, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Toshihiko Fukui on Sunday reiterated that the central bank will adjust interest rates gradually if Japan remains on track for gradual but solid expansion.

Fukui also said price rises may accelerate if the economy continues its sustained growth, but that there is little sign of inflationary risks building up in the near future.

"I told (members of the G20 meeting) that the economy continues to expand steadily, albeit gradually, amid stable prices," Fukui said in a news conference after a meeting of the Group of 20 finance ministers and central bank governors.

"If this trend continues, we will adjust monetary policy gradually, looking at various risk factors ahead," Fukui said. "That is what I told the G20 meeting."

Fukui offered no fresh clues on the timing of the next interest rate hike, which some in the market believe could happen as early as next month.

The BOJ has left monetary policy unchanged after hiking its key overnight call rate target to 0.25 percent from virtually zero in July, the first rate rise in six years
