Cold Pattern for Midwest
Fri Nov 7, 2014 09:02 AM CST
OMAHA (DTN) -- A much colder pattern for the central U.S., and dry conditions through the weekend in central Brazil, are the primary weather items for the commodity trade's attention Friday.
MOSTLY DRY MIDWEST PATTERN
The DTN ag weather forecast calls for much colder weather across the Midwest during the six-to-10-day timeframe next week. This pattern will slow development of winter wheat. Ahead of this cold surge there will be some areas, mostly in the Great Lakes, that see moderate precipitation and possibly even snow. Mostly dry conditions are also indicated for next week.
COLDER PATTERN FOR SOUTHERN PLAINS
In the Southern Plains, a colder weather pattern in the week ahead will slow the pre-dormancy development of winter wheat.
FAVORABLE NORTHERN PLAINS HARVEST TREND
Northern Plains crop areas will have a mostly dry and favorable trend for additional harvest progress in the next week. Low temperatures will add further drying to corn.
LIMITED RAIN IN DELTA
In the Delta, mostly dry conditions during the next seven days will favor harvest and fall fieldwork.
DRY FIVE-DAY PATTERN IN CENTRAL BRAZIL
Central Brazil will see less-than-ideal rainfall, along with warmer weather, during the next five days. This pattern will favor fieldwork and soybean planting. Longer-range outlooks continue to suggest an increase in rainfall during the six-to-10-day period. This will be important moisture for recently-planted soybeans.
WEEKEND SHOWERS FOR BRAZIL COFFEE BELT
Brazil coffee and sugarcane areas will have scattered showers and thundershowers through the weekend. These will favor developing sugarcane and flowering coffee, but they do not appear to be enough to ease dryness concerns. A second system moves in during the middle to late part next week that looks more promising; however, this occurrence is uncertain.
DRY WEEKEND FOR SOUTH BRAZIL AND ARGENTINA
Moderate to heavy rain is in store for southern Brazil Friday, with a drier trend in Argentina. Southern Brazil will also be drier through the weekend. This should help improve conditions for seasonal fieldwork.
DRY TREND CONTINUES IN RUSSIA
The forecast for Russia and Ukraine remains mostly dry and warm during the next week. This pattern offers little moisture for winter wheat. Poorly-established wheat may be susceptible to winterkill in the event of a cold winter if there is not enough snow cover to protect the crop.
FAVORABLE PLANTING TREND FOR SOUTH AFRICA
In South Africa, a drier trend through early next week will favor planting progress in eastern maize areas.
