Greek Market Edges Down

The benchmark index edges down on Tuesday on a small fluctuation range.

NBG’s forthcoming rights issue and possible similar moves by other banks combined with the three-month inertia following Piraeus bid for ATEBank and TT seem to force investors to stand in the sidelines.

“With the Athens market failing to capitalize on the positive momentum of markets abroad, we anticipate that the GI will move in the same levels today in a trading session similar to Monday’s. As long as rumors concerning potential deals in the banking sector do not evolve into actual announcements, the GI is expected to be “frustrated” by NBG’s share capital increase and mixed macroeconomic data. In this context, we expect the GI to open on slightly higher grounds assisted by yesterday’s US closure, possibly aiming for the 1,600 units (1st resistance level), before retreating towards the 1,580 units (1st support level) later during the day,” Pegasus Securities says.

Investment community seems to be holding a rather “wait and see” stance on the back of NBG’s share capital increase and the speculation that this has brought about, Marfin Analysis says while ATE Securities notes that a possible success of today’s T-bill auction is likely to affect market sentiment.

Across the board, the General Index drops 0.35% at 1,582.06 on a total turnover of 21.25 mil. euro.

PDMA Head: “Very Pleased” With Auction Results

Greece’s debt chief Petros Christodoulou said he was "very pleased" with the results of the Treasury bill auction.

"We are very pleased because the yield was only 17 basis points higher than the July auction, despite the fact the credit default swap spreads have risen since then," Christodoulou told Dow Jones Newswires.

"The bid-to-cover ratio was pleasingly higher than the 3.6 times coverage we saw in July, and with non-competitive bids I think we will raise about EUR1.44 billion from this auction," the PDMA chief added.
