Greek manufacturing slump continues in Feb -PMI

2011-03-01 09:10:28 GMT (Reuters)

* Output, new orders, employment fall faster
* Input price inflation accelerates

ATHENS, March 1 (Reuters) - The slump in Greece's manufacturing industry continued in February with output, new orders and employment hit by weak domestic demand and intense competition, a survey showed on Tuesday.

The Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) registered 42.8 points in February, unchanged from the previous month's eight-month low and firmly below the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction.

Austerity measures and plummeting consumer confidence stemming from Greece's efforts to tackle its debt burden look set to keep the economy in recession for a third year running.

Gross domestic product (GDP) is seen shrinking 3.0 percent this year after a projected 4.5 percent decline in 2010.

The country is suffering its deepest recession in almost 40 years, partly as a result of austerity measures that were a condition of it obtaining a 110 billion euro bailout from the European Union and International Monetary Fund, agreed last May.

Incoming new business continued to fall in February with weak domestic and foreign demand leading to a dip in total new work. As a result, firms were forced to pursue cost cutting and were slashing jobs at the fastest pace since August 2010.

Squeezed by input price inflation, which was the most marked since July 2008, manufacturers were forced to raise charges despite poor demand and strong competition.

"Greek manufacturers and their employees continued to suffer in February as the downturn in the sector persisted and the hoped-for recovery in new export orders had not yet materialised," said Markit economist Gemma Wallace.

"Rising input price pressures remained a prominent issue, forcing manufacturers to raise charges for a second straight month," the economist said.

Upward pressure from input costs led to a rise in manufacturing prices but the rate of increase remained marginal, the survey showed.

The output index fell to 40.5 from 42.6 in January.

Three tax officials jailed over VAT scam

Actions estimated to have cost taxpayers some 30 million euros

Three tax inspectors from Thessaloniki have been jailed for between five and 10 years for their part in a scam that is thought to have cost taxpayers about 30 million euros.

The officials were found guilty of colluding with several companies in northern Greece to accept forged invoices and to return value added tax (VAT) to them – payments that should never have been made.

The companies involved were set up as fronts, purporting to export goods so they could then claim back VAT payments.
The tax officials jailed include the former head of the VAT department at Thessaloniki’s main tax office.

An accountant has also been jailed for four years.

Greek Stocks Move Higher

Greek stocks move higher on Tuesday after 8.1% losses during the last six sessions. Turnover remains modest while the banking Index outperforms, gaining as much as 2.8%.

“Some further slide cannot be ruled out for the ASE in the mid-term while a technical reaction is possible following last week’s drop” says Kyprou Securities in its morning report.

“Potential surprises on major bank and other large cap results could affect the ASE’s short term course. International issues such as the turmoil in Northern Africa and decisions in EU-level about the ESFS should actually determine ASE’s course. We expect that the ASE will be volatile in May on the back of major decisions to be made on EU level that would significantly affect the Greek State debt” Kyprou Sec. adds.

“Yesterday’s finish significantly ameliorated the market’s outlook, as the GI came back from an abrupt intraday correction of 2.5% on increased trading volume and with the equities of the banking sector being in the spotlight. In this context, we remain positive as to a start towards the 1,595 units, which consist today’s 1st resistance level, with the Index’s course thereinafter being determined by bidside interest. Should buyers’ gradually fade away, however, we expect the Index to retreat towards today’s pivot point at 1,570” Pegasus Securities comments in its morning report.

The General Index gains 1.36% at 1,598.34. Total volume stands at 14.87 mln shares while turnover shapes at 52.62 mln euro.

Across the board 96 stocks move higher, 58 post loss and 30 remain unchanged.
