Banks asked to roll over Greek debt, ECB's Wellink says

AMSTERDAM | Sun Jun 5, 2011 7:27am EDT

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Banks are being asked to roll over their loans to Greece and Europe may give the heavily indebted country more money, European Central Bank Governing Council member Nout Wellink said on Sunday.
"We are trying, in what is called in official terms the Vienna initiative, to persuade banks to stay in those countries after 2012 and when debt matures to keep active in those countries," Wellink told Dutch current affairs television program Buitenhof when asked about Greece.
"I think the governments of Europe temporarily need to make available some additional refinancing money," Wellink said.

Greek Fiscal Measures May Include Wage Levy, Kathimerini Says

By Maria Petrakis - Jun 5, 2011 10:56 AM GMT+0200 Sun Jun 05 08:56:20 GMT 2011

Greece’s 6.4 billion-euro ($9.4 billion) package of budget cuts for the rest of this year will include an increase in sales tax for restaurants and a 3 percent levy on state workers’ wages to subsidize unemployment benefits, Kathimerini reported.
The government will consider streamlining taxes in September, including lowering the corporate rate to 15 percent from 20 percent, the Athens-based newspaper said, without saying how it got the information.

'Greek program going better than reported'

NEW YORK CITY (ANA-MPA / P. Panayiotou) -- The IMF's "point man" in the 110-billion-euro EC-ECB-IMF bailout for Greece on Friday reiterated that the closely watched economic adjustment and reform programme being implemented in the east Mediterranean nation is going "better than most think", as many goals have already been achieved.

Speaking only hours after the Greek government said it successfully concluded talks in Athens with representatives of the EC-ECB-IMF "troika" over approval of the fifth tranche of the bailout, Thomsen nevertheless added that much remains to be done.

Thomsen, the International Monetary Fund's deputy director of its European department and the IMF mission chief for Greece, underlined that a decisive effort is now needed by the Greek government to combat pervasive tax evasion in the country.

The high-profile IMF executive spoke at a panel discussion entitled "The Greek Economy After One Year of Reform: Progress and Challenges", hosted by the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Bethesda, Md.

In other statements, Thomsen said the Memorandum signed one year ago with the Greek government is now changing, as conditions have changed, while he emphasised that similar restructuring programmes often experience problems during their implementation. "... they are overcome though when there is devotion to the targets," he added.

More ominously, he emphasised that without the EC-ECB-IMF support package Greece would have collapsed, economically.

Other speakers at the event included Irene Ninetta Kyriakopoulos, a professor at the National Defense University; Thanos Catsambas, a former assistant director of the fiscal affairs department at the IMF, as well as moderator Evangelos Calamitsis, a former director of the IMF's African department.
