STRAUSS-KAHN: VACILLANO LE ACCUSE, CAMERIERA AVREBBE MENTITO

07:36 01 LUG 2011

Come sempre.
Rimandati ...

Gov't: Position stronger after votes

(ANA-MPA) -- Joining forces and sharing responsibility is the only way, according to Finance Minister and government vice-president Evangelos Venizelos, who expressed certainty on Thursday that Greece will go to Sunday's Eurogroup meeting much stronger following the approval received in Parliament of the medium-term fiscal strategy and enabling law.

Venizelos warned that things are still not easy for the country because "we must have clear messages as regards the participation of our partners in the debt management and we should overcome obstacles raised by countries like Finland that demand guarantees for their participation."

The finance minister criticized main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras for his stance, stressing that "the self-confidence he displayed earlier in parliament is due to the fact that the medium-term programme was passed, the country is now reliable and the government can continue the tough negotiation for the future of our country."

ND spokesman lashes out at FinMin; MP Bakoyannis

(ANA-MPA) -- The main opposition New Democracy (ND) party on Thursday accused Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos and MP Dora Bakoyannis, the one-time ND MP and founder of the new Democratic Alliance party, of misquoting ND leader Antonis Samaras.

ND party spokesman Yiannis Mihelakis stated that Venizelos and Bakoyannis, a previous minister, have resorted to an unprecedented misrepresentation of Samaras' statements and to "unacceptable slander", by maintaining that ND will vote against Memorandum II, currently debated in the Eurozone, without having studied it first.

Mihelakis referred to an "impropriety", saying political opponents are unable to challenge Samaras' positions as regards the unconstitutionality of their intention to have Memorandum II passed with a majority of 180 MPs.

The ND spokesman said \ Samaras has clearly stated that if the new Memorandum is in the right direction and is good for the country it will be approved by ND, but if it moves on the wrong direction, like the present memorandum, ND will vote against it -- regardless of the number of votes the government will set as a limit.

Mihelakis also underlined that Venizelos did not utter a word in response to the constitutionality issue raised by Samaras.

"The propaganda practices involving misquotations and slander expose Venizelos irreparably and prove him to be hypocritical when referring to consensus," Mihelakis stressed.

Ora immobile.
Il resto lo faranno i dati macro.
Che mi auguro positivi.

Number of people taking own lives up 40 percent, minister says

Health Minister Andreas Loverdos told Parliament on Thursday that the number of people taking their own lives in Greece has increased by 40 percent, responding to a question from independent MP Lefteris Avgenakis about the growing pressure on entrepreneurs and citizens due to the impact of the country’s debt crisis.
Loverdos did not explicitly link the alarming increase to the economic crisis, noting simply that “recent statistics and studies show an increase in suicides of around 40 percent.”
He said Greece remained among the countries with the lowest suicide rates, according to the World Health Organization (6.5 suicides per 100,000 residents last year).
This figure is believed to be lower than the real number, however, as many suicides are not reported due to the refusal of the Orthodox Church to conduct religious services for those who take their own lives.
A spokeswoman for Klimaka, a nongovernmental organization offering support to the homeless and depressed, said calls to the group’s helpline 1018 quadrupled last year. “One in four calls are about debts,” said Eleni Bekiari.

Government waits for loan after second vote

Bill for implementation of austerity voted into law, paving way for rescue funding

The government on Thursday voted for the implementation of an austerity package it had approved on Wednesday in a second parliamentary vote that effectively secured for Greece the next tranche of emergency funding it needs to stave off bankruptcy.
The bill - which outlines the implementation of the government’s complex midterm fiscal plan - was passed with all 154 MPs of ruling PASOK - and one conservative defector - voting for, 136 deputies voting against, and with five blank ballots and four abstentions. PASOK now has 154 deputies following the ousting of Panayiotis Kouroublis, who voted against the austerity measures on Wednesday.
The main conservative opposition New Democracy party also lost an MP, Elsa Papadimitriou, who voted for the austerity plan, breaking ranks with the party line and declaring herself an independent.
With the two votes in the bag, the onus shifted on Thursday to Greece’s creditors - the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund - who are now expected to approve the release of 12 billion euros in emergency funding that the country needs to meet its financial commitments through the summer.
The decision is expected to be rubber-stamped on Sunday at a meeting of finance ministers in Brussels. Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, who is to join his eurozone peers on Sunday, has said that Greece will be able to display “credibility” to its creditors with the two votes approved.
Addressing the Cabinet on Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister George Papandreou said the votes were a major step forward. “We fought and won a difficult battle, unified, all Greeks together,” Papandreou said. “Our chief duty now is to extract the country from the crisis as quickly as possible so that hope will return.”
The outcome of Thursday’s vote was also welcomed by European Union officials. “This was the second decisive step Greece needed to take in order to return to a sustainable path,” European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in a joint statement.
In very difficult circumstances, it was another act of national responsibility. The conditions are now in place for a decision on the disbursement of the next tranche of financial assistance for Greece and for rapid progress on a second assistance package.”
The EU leaders repearted calls for cross-party consensus on the government’s austerity drive Antonis ND has repeatedly attacked the austerity program, inviting criticism also from its conservative peers in the bloc. “In view of the hard work that still lies ahead, we repeat our call for all political parties to work together to take to their country forward,” they said.

German banks OK rollover plan

Agreement comes in time for Eurogroup meeting on Sunday; Belgian government seeks similiar commitment

dot_clear.gif
Germany’s biggest banks agreed on a proposal to roll over Greek debt holdings, the country’s Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said on Thursday.
The agreement, which follows a French plan reached last weekend, comes in time for eurozone finance ministers discuss the aid program at a meeting in Brussels on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters alongside Deutsche Bank’s chief executive, Josef Ackermann, in Berlin, Schaeuble said German banks hold some 10 billion euros in Greek government bonds but about 55 percent of them aren’t due to mature until after 2020.
The smaller portion due by 2014, around 2 billion euros, would be the focus of this agreement, he said.
Schaeuble said the agreement, based on a similar proposal put forward in France, would help eurozone finance ministers determine the broad outlines of a new aid package for Greece.
Ackermann, at a conference in Berlin on Wednesday with Chancellor Angela Merkel, predicted that financial companies would contribute to help avert a “meltdown.”
German and French lenders are the biggest foreign holders of Greek debt and their participation would help the European Union meet a goal of getting banks to roll over at least 30 billion euros of bonds.
The Belgian government is also seeking a commitment from the nation’s biggest banks and insurers on the amount of Greek debt they can roll over, Belgian National Bank Governor Luc Coene said on Thursday.
The talks, led by the Finance Ministry in Brussels, aim for an agreement in principle on the rollover amount, with the exact terms of the accord to be fixed in the next few days, Coene said. The country’s three biggest financial institutions are involved in the talks, he said.
Dexia is Belgium’s biggest owner of Greek government bonds, with holdings of 4.27 billion euros at the end of last year, according to its 2010 annual report. Ageas, the majority owner of Belgium’s biggest life insurer, reported Greek sovereign debt holdings of 1.83 billion euros at the end of March and KBC Groep NV said it held 600 million euros of Greek government bonds as of March 31.
