UPDATE 1-Greece to complete bailout talks by Thurs -paper

Wed Jun 1, 2011 3:50am EDT

* Finance ministry will not comment on FAZ report on IMF
* Ministerial committee meets on downsizing public sector
(Adds meeting on public sector, background)

ATHENS, June 1 (Reuters) - Greece and a team of EU/IMF/ECB inspectors are set to conclude talks by Thursday on a medium-term fiscal plan including the government's progress towards meeting budget targets, a Greek newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Inspectors from the "troika" are in Athens to decide whether to release a tranche of 12 billion euros the country needs next month to avoid a default. In part due to IMF demands, discussions on a new package that would meet Greece's needs up to 2014 are also taking place.
The new package, expected to total around 65 billion euros according to EU officials, could involve a mixture of collateralised loans from the EU and IMF, and additional revenue measures, with unprecedented intrusive external supervision of Greece's privatisation programme.
"Government sources say talks with the 'troika' representatives will be completed by tomorrow morning at the latest, so that the 2011 measures and the mid-term fiscal plan come before a cabinet meeting for approval on Friday," daily Kathimerini said.
The German government has said that it expected the talks to be completed by the end of this week, or possibly early next week.
Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported that the IMF would not pay its share of the bailout tranche at end-June, but would take part in a new programme for Greece.

A Greek finance ministry spokeswoman declined to comment.
The IMF said last week it would not release the next slice of aid to keep Greece afloat unless the EU guaranteed Athens' entire funding needs for the next 12 months.
That is problematic since under the current plan Greece would resume raising some money from the markets in March 2012 -- an assumption that is now unrealistic given sky-high Greek bond yields in secondary market trade.
European officials are holding talks in Vienna to sketch out options for a second bailout package, with private sector participation still under discussion to help relieve the country of its massive debt burden.
Deputy Prime Minister Theodoros Pangalos will also chair an interministerial meeting on Wednesday on moves to downsize the public sector and terminate some government bodies as Athens scrambles to cut its wage bill further.
A press conference will follow.
The government is considering shrinking, merging and terminating a number of agencies that have no substantive mission, keen to show its lenders it is determined to shrink the public sector.

Ultima modifica:
Idem negli altri paesi occidentali. .

Tripla pazienza!
Ciao, ciao, Giuseppe

UPDATE 1-German report casts doubt on IMF payout for Greece

Wed Jun 1, 2011 4:10am EDT

* IMF seems certain not to pay next tranche - paper
* FAZ, without sources, says IMF part of new Greek programme
* Report clashes with what sources have told Reuters
(Adds details, background)

BERLIN, June 1 (Reuters) - It seems certain the IMF will not pay its share of an aid tranche to Greece at the end of the month but the global lender is likely take part in any new programme, a German newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Without quoting any sources, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) said a new bailout programme was probably the only way to save Greece from bankruptcy.
The suggestion in the FAZ report that that IMF would withhold its share of a 12 billion euro tranche due to be paid out to Greece at the end of the month was at odds with what sources have told Reuters in recent days.
"I don't expect the IMF to blink first," one International Monetary Fund (IMF) source with knowledge of the negotiations said this week. "Everyone has an interest in finding a solution. We still have a few weeks."
The euro dipped against the dollar after the newspaper report, before recovering.

"It is by now considered as certain that the IMF will not disburse its share of the next tranche of the current aid programme at the end of June," FAZ newspaper wrote without citing sources.
"It is only allowed to do so if the financing of the current programme is secured for 12 months. The troika apparently concludes that that is not the case," it added.
The troika of IMF, EU Commission and European Central Bank investigators is expected to complete its mission to Athens this week and then produce a review of the government's progress towards meeting it deficit targets.
Its report will determine whether Athens gets the next aid tranche in June under a 110 billion euro rescue package Greece took from the European Union and IMF a year ago.
A new aid programme for Greece would include new conditions for Athens and fresh aid, which the IMF would likely stump up for, the FAZ also said.
