ALPINE lands contract for construction of Dortmund city railway

Construction of the 11.5-million-euro contract to lower the city railway line Ia to start January 2013
The City of Dortmund awarded the contract to build part of the Ia city railway to the ALPINE Construction Company yesterday. The contract volume is worth EUR 11.5 million. Construction is to start in January 2013 and should be completed by the end of 2014. The contract involves lowering the double-track city railway line, currently running on the surface, to below the ground by the cut and cover method. ALPINE will build two 150-meter troughs, a 268-meter tunnel and provide the road and sewer construction work.
The City of Dortmund’s urban transport system has been gradually expanded since 1969. Its railway network has meanwhile grown to a length of 75 kilometers. The city railway, a combination of subway and tramway, now carries over 130 million passengers per year. One fourth of the rail network runs underground, the major part running above ground.
