Members attend weekly Weight Watchers meetings to receive group support and education about healthy eating patterns, behaviour modification, and physical activity.
OVERVIEW
Weight Watchers is big in weight loss. It hosts more than 36,000 weekly meetings worldwide facilitated by more than 10,000 leaders. In the form of a support group, per se, meetings cover nutrition advice and lifestyle tips to help its 800,000 members lose weight and ultimately reach lifetime membership status. Weight Watchers also offers advice and recipes on its website and sells products, such as recipe books, food, activity monitor, and vitamins. Its Weight Watchers Magazine has a US readership of 8 million. Jean Nidetch and Al and Felice Lippert started Weight Watchers in 1963; it now holds classes in about 30 countries. European investment firm Artal Luxembourg owns about 52% of Weight Watchers.
Operations
Weight Watchers sells its products primarily through its meeting operations and to its franchisees. Sales of proprietary products through meetings represented some 11% of its 2014 sales.
The primary Weight Watchers diet plans are PointsPlus and ProPoints -- although dieting plans can vary by market. At the heart of the PointsPlus plan, which serves the US and Canada, is the POINTS Weight Loss System, which doesn't restrict types of foods but limits dieters to a points budget that is based on a calculation of calories, fat, and fiber. PointsPlus places a point value on a food's protein, carbohydrate, fat, and dietary fiber content and takes into account how these foods are processed and how full a dieter feels after consuming them. Dieters are encouraged to consume what the company has identified as "power foods," which are healthier and more satisfying food choices. On the PointsPlus plan many fruits and vegetables are points-free as a way to encourage those who want to lose weight to eat a more plant-based diet. ProPoints is the similar plan that is geared toward the UK and Australia.
