Jan 31, 2009 (The Miami Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- JNJ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Johnson & Johnson is eliminating 159 jobs in Miami Lakes and transferring the work to Juarez, Mexico.
The company's Codman Neurovascular unit will eliminate the jobs by April 30, according to a disclosure provided to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation.
The move is "part of a long-term plan to streamline our manufacturing," said Christopher Allman, a spokesman for J&J's Cordis unit, which ran the neurovascular company until recently.
Codman Neurovascular makes medical devices such as stents and catheters, which doctors use to solve problems in blood vessels of the brain.
Workers will receive severance pay and have known about the plans for some time, Allman said. "This was not new news to them," he said. "They've been aware of this for two years."
Cordis' Miami Lakes facility, at 14201 NW 60th Ave., isn't closing, Allman added. At least 500 employees will continue to work at the site in areas such as regulatory affairs, research and development and limited manufacturing, he said.
