DJ CBOT Soy Outlook: Beans Seen Down 3-5c On Bearish Reports
CHICAGO (Dow Jones)--Chicago Board of Trade soybean futures are expected to
open 3-5 cents a bushel lower Thursday on bearish government sales and crush
reports with weakness extending from a poor close overnight in screen trading.
"There is not one positive thing out here this morning," a broker on the
trading floor said.
The U.S. Census Bureau said in its monthly oilseed crush report, released
Thursday morning, that U.S. processors crushed 150 million bushels of soybeans
during December, 1 million bushels less than what industry observers had
penciled in for the month. December soymeal inventories of 271,306 short tons
were well over the average pre-report estimate of 232,300 tons.
But December soyoil stocks of 1.290 billion pounds were just under pre-report
estimates averaging 1.296 billion and ranging from 1.290 billion to 1.300
billion.
And in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly export sales report,
soybean sales for the week ending Jan. 20 totaled 519,300 metric tons, which
was on the bottom end of industry guesses. Pre-report estimates ranged from
500,000 to 700,000 tons. China was again the primary customer of 300,900 tons
in fresh business while switching 110,000 tons of previous purchases from
unknown. Physical exports for the week totaled a hefty 1.136 million tons with
nearly half going to China and a third going to Europe.
Soymeal sales of 47,100 tons were just under pre-report estimates of 50,000
to 100,000 tons, but soyoil sales of 16,700 tons were above estimates ranging
from 5,000 to 15,000 tons.
Pressure is also seen coming from offshore exchanges where competing markets
were steady to weaker overnight. Malaysian crude palm oil futures on the Bursa
Malaysia Derivatives ended lower Thursday with new contract lows on concerns
about high stocks amid sluggish consumer demand amid weak CBOT soyoil futures.
The April contract ended at MYR1,280 a metric ton, down MYR16.
Soybean futures on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange settled slightly lower
in thin trading Thursday behind the fall in CBOT soybeans. The May contract
fell CNY6 a metric ton to settle at CNY2,578 a ton, and the GMO May contract
settled CNY9 lower at CNY2,540 a ton. DCE soymeal futures settled flat to lower
in thin trading with the May soymeal contract settling CNY7 lower at CNY2,138 a
ton.
Rotterdam soybean prices were mixed and soymeal was steady to lower. European
vegoils were steady to weaker.
