ZURICH -- Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG (NVS) Wednesday said net profit rose 70% in the fourth quarter from a year earlier when a number of patent expiries and a restructuring charge had weighed on earnings, but the volatile dollar took a heavy toll on sales growth.
The company said it expects record results in 2009, but also warned that the market and economic environment is becoming increasingly challenging.
Novartis, based in Basel, also reported a small pipeline setback, saying it will file meningitis vaccine Menveo for approval for use in infants in 2011, which is later than planned. This comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked to test the vaccine on an additional 1,500 infants.
Net profit rose to $1.54 billion in the three months ended Dec. 31, from $904 million a year earlier. This was below the average estimate of $1.83 billion from 12 analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.
Analysts at JP Morgan had cautioned in a research note sent ahead of the earnings release that consensus estimates probably underestimated the negative impact on earnings from the volatile, and overall strengthening, dollar in the fourth quarter.
Novartis said net sales from continuing operations rose to $10.08 billion from $9.93 billion. Expressed in the currencies of where the drugs were sold, this corresponds to an increase of 8%. Analysts had expected net sales to come in at around $10.51 billion.
"The fourth-quarter numbers are clearly below expectations, but the outlook for 2009 is encouraging," said Karl-Heinz Koch, pharmaceutical analyst in Zurich with independent broker Helvea, who has a buy rating on the stock.
Novartis expects sales to increase at around 5% in 2009, led by drug sales, which it sees expanding at a mid-to-high single-digit rate, excluding currency effects.
"Novartis anticipates another year of record results in 2009, continuing its path of sustainable growth," Chief Executive Daniel Vasella said in a statement. But the company also cautioned that the market environment is becoming increasingly challenging.
Sales at the flagship pharmaceuticals unit rose 5% to $6.43 billion, pressured by the strengthening dollar over the quarter. Blood-pressure lowering agent Diovan, which will lose patent protection around 2011/2012, remained the best selling drug at $1.42 billion. Cancer drug Gleevec, the second-best selling product, contributed $890 million.
At the generics and consumer health units sales declined. The generics business, operating under the name of Sandoz, is suffering from a lack of launches in the important U.S. market and the impact of the recall of a product called metoprolol.
The consumer health unit, which is selling drugs that don't require a doctor's prescription, is starting to feel the impact from the deteriorating economic environment, which has seen consumers reduce spending.
Novartis will pay out a dividend of CHF2 a share for 2008, which represents a 25% increase from 2007.

FRANKFURT -- Business software company SAP AG (SAP) said Wednesday fourth quarter net profit rose 13% on consolidation effects and cost savings, boosting its shares, but said it will cut 3,000 jobs as it continues to control costs.
Net profit for the quarter ending Dec. 31 was EUR850 million compared with EUR752 million in the same period a year earlier.
Software and software-related service revenue, a closely watched figure, was up 8% on year at EUR2.67 billion, SAP said. Total revenue for the period was EUR3.49 billion, up 8% from EUR3.24 billion in the same quarter a year ago.
"It looks like SAP delivered more cost savings than expected," said UniCredit analyst Knut Woller. Woller has a buy rating on the share with a target price of EUR33.
SAP shares rose in early trade as a result, and by 0827 GMT were up 6% at EUR27.79, outperforming a 2.1% rise in the DAX.
"We believe the cost containment measures will allow us to adapt to the tough market conditions and ensure the long term competitiveness of the company. Moreover, we expect 2009 to be a year of limited visibility, making it increasingly difficult to project sales in this environment," said SAP Co-CEO Leo Apotheker.
SAP said it will reduce its global work force to 48,500 from 51,500, leading to annual cost savings of EUR300 million to EUR350 million from 2010 onwards. The company expects restructuring charges of EUR200 million to EUR300 million related to the job losses.
Apotheker, in an interview with Bloomberg TV Wednesday, ruled out forced lay-offs. A company spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires SAP will offer compensation to employees who leave the company voluntarily, and won't fill free positions.
Walldorf, Germany-based SAP, which competes with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) and Oracle Corp. (ORCL), said in Octoberthat its business had already been hit by the economic downturn in the third quarter, when sales missed expectations.
At that time, SAP implemented cost saving measures that paid out in the fourth quarter, boosting the bottom line, a company spokesman said. SAP's fourth quarter net profit also benefitted from the acquisition of France's Business Objects, which SAP acquired last January in a EUR4.8 billion deal.
SAP said it expects to post a non-GAAP operating of 24.5%-25.5% for full-year 2009, including restructuring costs but excluding charges related to the Business Objects acquisition. SAP also said that outlook is based on the assumption that non-GAAP software and software-related services revenue will be flat or decline by 1% at constant currencies from 2008's EUR8.62 billion. SAP's 2008 non-GAAP operating margin at constant currencies was 28.4%.
SAP's business software comprises enterprise resource planning and related applications such as supply chain management and product life-cycle management.

PARIS -- STMicroelectronics NV (STM) is ready to reduce costs further if its plans to cut over $700 million over the course of 2009 prove to be inadequate to deal with the slump in demand, Chief Executive Carlo Bozotti told Dow Jones Newswires.
"We'll decide at the end of this quarter," Bozotti said in an interview. "We need to look continuously and to monitor and track."
The Franco-Italian chip maker is basing plans to cut $700 million in costs in 2009 on the assumption that the first and second quarters of the year will be the bottom of the drop in demand for semiconductors.
"We have taken some assumptions, based on these assumptions, (that) the $700 million is enough," he said. "If this assumption will not be proven .. of course we will have to take more measures."
For the time being, the second quarter looks as difficult as the first quarter, which is being hurt by "extremely" weak demand in Asia, exacerbated the Chinese new year, Bozotti said.
"We do not see a real measurable improvement in the second quarter," he said. "I think that the first quarter and second-quarter could be at the same level .. in terms of demand .. and therefore in terms of billings."
STMicro will get a better understanding of the situation during March, Bozotti added.

Auto, in arrivo aiuti statali ma pochi incentivi per 300 milioni

Ecoincentivi per circa 4 milioni di veicoli con un impegno per un massimo di 300-400 milioni. Queste a quanto pare le cifre che il Governo presenterà oggi al tavolo istituzionale convocato a Palazzo Chigi per il settore dell'auto. Secondo alcune fonti, se passerà il piano del ministro Scajola, si potranno rottamare anche le auto Euro2 immatricolate tra il 1998 e il 1999. Il risultato sarebbe un dimezzamento del calo previsto per il mercato dal 20% al 10%.

Ma si parla anche di altre risorse: 450 milioni per facilitare il credito al consumo con un bonus fiscale simile a quello per l'edilizia. Altri 250 milioni andrebbero al sostegno di tutta la filiera dell'auto. Troppo poco per il sindaco di Torino, Sergio Chiamparino: ''ho sentito che si parla di 300 milioni", ha detto oggi il Sindaco, "e mi sembra poco visto che Sarkozy in Francia mette cinque miliardi (2,3 miliardi di sterline quanto erogato dall'Inghilterra, ndr). C'e' un problema di pari opportunità in campo internazionale''.

L'ipotesi è stata discussa ieri a Roma tra i vertici Fiat, i ministri Giulio Tremonti (Economia), Claudio Scajola (Sviluppo Economico), Maurizio Sacconi (Welfare) e il sottosegretario alla presidenza del Consiglio, Gianni Letta. L'allargamento degli incentivi agli Euro due consentirebbe di ampliare la platea delle vetture che potrebbero sfruttare il bonus: tra le 200 e le 250.000.

I manager avrebbero anche chiesto un sostegno diretto alle imprese di tutto il comparto perchè le difficoltà di Fiat hanno effetti diretti su tutta la filiera della produzione: mettere in mobilità un operaio del Lingotto vuol dire mandare a casa quattro operai dell'indotto.

Dopo i timori espressi dallo stesso amministratore delegato del Lingotto Sergio Marchionne sui 60.000 posti a rischio nel comparto, nelle fabbriche sale la preoccupazione. Gli annunci di chiusura temporanea degli stabilimenti diffusi da tutti i principali gruppi automobilistici fanno prevedere, in base all'analisi dell'istituto Ihs, un calo della produzione in Europa nel primo trimestre dell'anno.

Il gruppo Fiat dovrebbe subire rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2008, un taglio del 19% alla produzione, mentre nella Ue il calo dovrebbe attestarsi al 25% con una perdita globale di 950 giorni lavorativi. A Piazza Affari, in attesa del tavolo di Palazzo Chigi e degli annunci del Governo, il titolo Fiat stamani segna un progresso dell'1,70% a 3,73 euro in vista anche dei dati sulle vendite di auto in Italia a gennaio che per il Centro Studi Promotor (Csp) dovrebbero aver mostrato un calo superiore al 30%.

Inoltre, secondo MF, il Governo potrebbe garantire un'emissione di un nuovo bond Fiat che avrebbe così una cedola più contenuta. "Crediamo che, pur se positivi, queste siano soluzioni che non modificheranno sostanzialmente il trend in corso per il mercato dell'auto", sottolinea stamani un analista di una primaria sim milanese. "Attualmente attendiamo un calo del mercato italiano nel 2009 del 22% e del 35% nel primo trimestre".

Quello degli aiuti al settore auto è un tema che sta facendo discutere tutto il globo. E se i governi di alcune nazioni hanno già preso decisioni importanti, nel bel paese, stiamo ancora discutendo il da farsi.
Ma già mercoledì potrebbero arrivare interessanti novità dal tavolo sul settore auto convocato dal presidente del Consiglio Silvio Berlusconi. Ma la questione rimane delicata anche per la coalizione al Governo: la Lega Nord infatti dissente su qualsiasi aiuto possa arrivare alla Fiat dopo l’incontro del 28 Gennaio. Il ministro della Semplificazione Roberto Calderoli ha respinto con forza l’ipotesi di un aiuto di Stato indirizzato specificatamente alla Fiat.
“Abbiamo pagato abbastanza volte per la Fiat per reintervenire. Se così fosse ci sarebbe la rivolta del popolo. Non si possono condividere i debiti e tenersi gli utili”- ha affermato Calderoli- “Le aziende devono essere considerate nel loro insieme. Il governo ha aiutato le famiglie e le imprese e la Fiat rientra tra queste.
