Donald Coxe in uno special commentary...

The fundamental reasons
for owning commodity stocks—shrinkage of reserves in
the ground in politically-secure areas of the world, the new
middle class in China and India, a global food crisis, deteriorating
government balance sheets, which have so often been the
precursors of infl ation—remain unchanged. But the prices of
the quality commodity stocks are back to where they were in
March—or last year.
For long-term investors, this is potentially a career-defi ning
opportunity. Those who believe that what they believed a few
weeks ago is still true have a chance to buy at prices they didn’t
expect to see again. For those who never believed the story, there
is that glorious secret pleasure of being proved right—at last.
We haven’t changed our views about the long term. Bailouts cannot
continue forever. Market forces will reassert themselves.
We just don’t know when.

White House lays out radical financial bailout plan with jawdropping price tag: $500 billion

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080919/financial_meltdown.html
grazie, MINIMO 500b, allora diciamo pure 800b

As of September 2008, the total U.S. federal debt was approximately $9.7 trillion[2], about $31,700 per capita (that is, per U.S. resident).

With the government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, U.S. taxpayers now essentially own the bulk of the nation's mortgage market.
This ownership could even lead to a big increase in the national debt — to $15 trillion, up from just under $10 trillion now — if things don't work out as planned.
