NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- The fed funds futures market is now pricing in a chance of a rate cut by the end of January,
following data showing that wholesale inflation in October declined a low more than expected. February fed funds futures were last up 0.02 at 94.77, which implied an 8% chance that the Federal Reserve will cut its target on overnight rates to 5% from 5.25% by its policy setting meeting at the end of January. Late Monday, the futures were pricing in no change in rates. The producer price index fell 1.6% in October, while core PPI, which excludes food and energy components, declined 0.9%. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had been expecting PPI to decline 0.5% and core PPI to rise 0.1%, on average.
