Though I also have a feeling that this isn't has "official" as we may think. Milan is the logical, obvious choice for a hub, not Rome. Not only is Milan the financial centre of Italy, it is one of the wealthiest regions in all of Europe, not to mention the world.

Exactly.
Now, of course, stupid decisions would be about par for the course considering what has happened to Alitalia over the last 5-10 years thanks to its management and unions. However, as you say, it makes absolutely no sense to move Alitalia's largest longhaul/intercontinental from the country's highest-yielding, most affluent, and most industrialized region to a high-volume but much lower-yield market like Rome. Don't get me wrong: Rome definitely makes sense for longhaul flights, but not as the primary longhaul hub, because it has a far weaker business traffic component and is dominated by lower-yielding, and much more seasonal, leisure traffic.
I suppose we shall see, and should be interesting to see what happens.
But, as others have said, I completely agree that if Alitalia is stupid enough to cut its nonstop Milan-Miami nonstop, American no doubt will not let it sit without nonstop service for long: it's a logical market for one or the other (AZ or AA) to serve, seeing as one as a huge hub at each end of the route.
