Greenspan:Would be optimistic on US absent oil rise

WASHINGTON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan on Wednesday said he would be "very optimistic" on the outlook for the U.S. economy absent the sharp rise in oil prices.
"If it weren't for the oil price spike, I would be very optimistic about where the economy is going," Greenspan told the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee.

US Treasuries firm, auction springs a surprise

NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Treasury debt prices were firmer on Wednesday, although an auction of new U.S. debt caused some confusion in the market.
The sale of $15 billion in new five-year Treasury notes seemed on the surface to go well. It went at a high yield of 3.439 percent and drew bids for 2.72 times the amount on offer, above August's 2.64 level.

But the breakdown of bidders produced a big surprise. Indirect bidders, including customers of primary dealers and foreign central banks, picked up a relatively low $4.68 billion, 31 percent of the whole issue. Primary dealers themselves got $5.38 billion of the issue.

The surprise was that direct bidders bought $4.75 billion of the new notes, far above the usual take for this class.
The current five-year note (US5YT=RR: Quote, Profile, Research) was 5/32 firmer in price, lowering its yield to 3.42 percent from 3.46 percent on Tuesday. In when-issued trading, yields on the new five-year paper had hovered around 3.45 percent before the sale.

Stanotte sono tornato a casa tardi e quando ho guardato i grafici di US ho pensato: non mi ero reso conto di aver bevuto troppo - non capisco veramente più nulla - livelli sul bund:
