Crypto Billionaire Spat Sparks Market Fears and Bitcoin Selloff
A faceoff between two of the most influential figures in cryptocurrency—the CEOs of Binance and FTX, the largest crypto exchanges—sparked panic selling in digital assets early Tuesday. The price of Bitcoin and other tokens fell.

  • Binance’s Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, said Sunday that his group would sell its entire holdings of the FTT token, said to be worth more than $500 million. FTT is the native token of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX and can be used for a variety of purposes on the exchange, including as collateral for trades.
  • CZ said his decision was “risk management.” It came following a report that much of the assets of Alameda Research—a major trading firm and market maker founded by Bankman-Fried—consisted of FTT, which is relatively illiquid.
  • The crux of market fears are that if the FTT token collapses it could put Alameda in jeopardy, potentially leading to knock-on effects for FTX, which is used by more than a million users, in addition to wider contagion. Bankman-Fried has said that FTX’s assets are solid and that it has excess cash.
  • The turmoil has led to FTT plunging 20% over the past day as traders dump the token and amass short positions betting against it. Selling has spread to other cryptos, with Bitcoin dropping to its lowest level in two weeks, below $20,000.
What’s Next: Analysts are eyeing the possibility of a private, over-the-counter trade with Alameda—mooted by its CEO, Caroline Ellison—which would allow Binance to dump FTT without the sale rippling across the open market. Ultimately, both crypto heavyweights should want to avoid any more major market turmoil for digital assets, which are already having one of their worst years ever.
