Panhellenic Exporters Association...

Greek exports in the first six months of 2010 rose 2.2 percent to 7.32 billion euros, versus an 18.4 percent decline in the same period a year earlier, according to figures from the Panhellenic Exporters Association (PEA). The majority of exports are made up of agricultural products and industrial goods, such as machinery and chemicals. PEA President Christina Sakellaridis welcomed government plans to provide export companies with subsidies as part of a development law currently being drawn up.

Greece Says Meets Deficit Slashing Target In 7M

Greece said its effort to cut its ballooning deficit is on track, with spending down by almost 40 percent in the first seven months of the year.
Still, revenues grew at a slower pace, Ministry of Finance said in a statement late Tuesday.

The deficit shortfall slowed from 45.4 percent in the first six months to 39.7 percent in the January-July period.

Greece’s annual target is 39.5%.

The decline "can be traced to ordinary revenue increases slightly lagging behind the target as well as to a substantial increase of interest expenditures in July," the ministry said.

Citi: Greece Will Meet Deficit Cutting Target For 2010

The pace of Greece’s improvement in the budget deficit had been extraordinary in Q2 – improvement on average of EUR 2.5bn relative to 2009 levels – “so some slowdown seems natural to us,” Citi says in a report dated August 11.

It noted that the central government budget balance (cash basis), as reported Monday by the Greek central bank, recorded a deficit of EUR 14.47bn in the period Jan-Jul 2010 – significantly down from EUR 21.47bn in the same period of 2009. However, the July figure, with a deficit of EUR 3.0bn, was worse than July 2009 (deficit of EUR 1.8bn)-the first deterioration in annual terms since the beginning of the year (together with March).

The end-June deadline to meet the EU/IMF adjustment programme criteria could have led to postponement of some payments into July, making the June deficit figures look particularly good, the firm says.

“We expect the progressive implementation of the fiscal tightening measures should continue to reduce the deficit in coming months. Even if the monthly deficits for the remaining part of this year were to follow the same path as last year (i.e. without any further improvement in annual terms), the year-end central government deficit would end up at around EUR 15bn – still well below the target.”

Greek Market Inches Down

Athens stocks are weaker on Wednesday, tracking European indices while turnover is very low, affected by the domestic holiday season.

"Macro concerns in China and a weaker outlook for a US recovery have affected sentiment," a local head of analysis told Dow Jones Newswires.

"But volumes remain anemic so it can΄t be considered anything close to a sell-off," he added.

“ATHEX could retain the minus sign on the back of foreign markets’ downward movement. Volumes are seen thin, while any interest should be directed towards banks,” Marfin Analysis says in its morning report.

Across the board, the General Index drops 0.79% at 1,652.81, on a total turnover of just 28.88 mil. euro.
