Euro Advances Versus Yen Before Finance Ministers Meet on Greece, Portugal

The euro advanced against the yen and was little changed versus the dollar before a meeting of European finance ministers to discuss Greece’s financing needs and an aid package for Portugal.
The euro appreciated 0.3 percent to 114.37 yen as of 8:20 a.m. in London. Against the dollar, it traded at $1.4126, from $1.4119 in New York on May 13, having weakened as low as $1.4048 earlier today.
Nemat Shafik, a deputy managing director at the International Monetary Fund, will represent the institution at the Brussels meeting, after police said its Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn was charged with attempted rape and a criminal sex act on a woman in a New York hotel. Strauss-Kahn denies the charges.

Zona euro, assenza Strauss-Kahn no impatto su vertice - Irlanda

DUBLINO, 16 maggio (Reuters) - L'assenza del numero uno del Fondo Monetario Internazionale, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, non avrà nessun impatto sulla riunione dei ministri delle Finanze della zona euro di oggi.
Lo ha detto oggi il ministro agli Affari europei irlandese parlando all'emittente nazionale RTE.
"Trattiamo con l'istituzione, non con l'individuo. Dominique Strauss-Kahn ha avuto un ruolo significativo negli eventi degli ultimi mesi in relazione al salvataggio dell'Irlanda e al resto", ha detto Lucinda Creighton. "Ma non è inusuale che il capo del Fmi manchi ad una riunione di questo tipo e non penso che avrà davvero alcun impatto", ha aggiunto, precisando che difficilmente la riduzione del tasso di interesse dei prestiti Fmi/Ue all'Irlanda sarà oggetto dei colloqui. Strauss-Kahn è stato arrestato negli Usa con l'accusa di violenza sessuale.

MARKET TALK: haircut inevitabile per debito greco (Citigroup)

MILANO (MF-DJ)--Un haircut sul debito greco "sara' inevitabile" se Atene vuole tornare sulla strada della sostenibilita' fiscale. Lo sostengono gli analisti di Citigroup in una nota, aggiungendo che non e' chiaro il valore dell'haircut necessario, "visto l'alto grado di incertezza legato all'ammontare delle entrate dalle privatizzazioni e alle passivita' contingenti". Nella nota si legge inoltre che "anche la tempistica dell'haircut resta incerta, e sara' negoziata alla luce sia della capacita' dei creditori di assorbire le perdite, sia delle necessita' fiscali delle autorita' greche". Gli analisti di Citigroup si attendono infine che, prima dell'introduzione di haircut, "e' probabile che sia decisa un'estesione delle maturita' sul debito".

Cabinet to discuss measures for center of Athens




ANA-MPA/The Cabinet will meet on Monday afternoon, chaired by prime minister George Papandreou, to discuss a package of measures for upgrading the historic center of Athens and deal with violence.
Earlier, the premier will hold talks with Athens mayor George Kaminis.
In an interview appearing in TA NEA newspaper, Kaminis outlined specific proposals, warning that the increasing use of violence in the city, as well as incidents of people taking justice into their own hands, posed a serious threat to Athens.
