Deputy PM rejects EU's calls for political consensus



Pangalos says Greece has to satisfy lenders to secure fifth loan instalment

Deputy Prime Minister Theodoros Pangalos has raised objections to calls from EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn for political consensus over reforms in Greece but the government’s No. 2 accepts that Athens might not receive its next EU-IMF loan instalment if it fails to meet its creditors’ demands.
Speaking to Skai TV on Wednesday morning, Pangalos said Rehn was wrong to demand that Greece’s opposition parties and the government should reach agreement over the measures that need to be implemented.
“It is possible for Portugal and Ireland; why not for Greece?” Rehn said at a meeting of EU finance ministers on Tuesday but Pangalos suggested the Finn had overstepped the mark.
“His comments suggest that he is trying to attach political terms to the administrative relationship between the European Union and the Greek government but this is not correct and makes things worse,” said the deputy prime minister.
“It is only to be expected that if political terms are added, we will tell him to get his hands off,” added Pangalos.
Greece came under more pressure this week to adopt more effective austerity measures and to speed up its privatization program to secure the fifth instalment of its 110-billion-euro austerity package next month.
At the same time, discussions about some form of restructuring or further loans to Greece have also been discussed.
Pangalos admitted that whether Greece will receive its next loan tranche depends on how well the government applies the loan memorandum. However, he rejected suggestions that additional measures would be needed.
The deputy premier said that Greece’s problem is that its revenues are too low as the government has not done enough to tackle tax evasion.

Hai ragione e quanto dici probabilmente è l'unica ragione che ci salverà in qualche modo....se guardassimo solo i numeri non c'è scampo ma se guardiamo alla soluzione "politica" allora....

IMF Official: Greece Plan Mostly On Track But Must Step Up Reforms



LAGONISSI, Greece -(Dow Jones)- Greece's reform program remains largely on track, a senior official at the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday, but he called on the Greek government to step up its efforts at further structural reform.
Speaking at a conference in a resort south of Athens, IMF Deputy Director Poul Thomsen said that Greece's efforts to cut its budget deficit in the past year had been "very, very impressive," dismissing recent speculation that the country's reform program had veered seriously off course.
"Let me say upfront that the program has largely achieved what it set out to do in the first year," Thomsen, who is responsible for supervising that program, said. "However, the government must reinvigorate the program or it risks going off track."
In May last year, Greece narrowly avoided default with the help of an EUR110 billion bailout from the European Union and International Monetary Fund in exchange for measures to overhaul its economy and cut its budget deficit.
Since then, Greece has cut its budget deficit by roughly a third, to 10.5% of gross domestic product in 2010. However, recent revisions in prior annual figures, and a deeper-than-expected recession, mean that Greece will have to take an additional EUR6 billion in austerity measures this year to meet its 2011 deficit goals.
Those measures are expected to be announced in the next few days, along with steps the government will take over the next five years to further reduce its budget deficit to below 1% of GDP by 2015.
Thomsen's remarks come as a visiting delegation of EU, IMF and European Central Bank officials--known locally as the troika--are in Athens to hammer out the details of those additional measures, as well as to judge the country's eligibility to receive a fifth disbursement of that EUR110 billion loan.

ATHENS May 18 (Reuters) - Greece's high borrowing costs may stay high into 2012 before narrowing as markets' trust in the country's reforms and the EU crisis response mechanism grows, the IMF's chief of mission to the debt-laden country said on Wednesday.
"I do believe that with the subsequent acceleration (of reforms) and now with the clarity of the European response mechanism, spreads will start coming down significantly but I think that this might not happen by next year."
He said Greece's high yield spreads reflected developments outside the country and that they were coming down until talk of debt restructuring by some EU leaders unsettled markets.

Il turismo interno ellenico nel 2011 subirà una contrazione del 20 per cento rispetto al 2010; è quanto ha recentemente affermato Andreas Andreadis, presidente della Federazione Panellenica degli Albergatori. Andreadis ha affermato che sebbene tale trend non dovrebbe avere significative ripercussioni sulle cifre complessive del settore, genera comunque preoccupazione riguardo la sopravvivenza di tutte le strutture di dimensioni medio - piccole che basano la propria attività su questo tipo di turismo. Nel settore delle camere in affitto, che attrae la maggior parte dei turisti greci, operano circa 40.000 imprese per complessivi 500.000 posti letto, pari al 40 per cento del potenziale turistico del Paese, che danno lavoro a oltre 100.000 persone. Il crescente senso di insicurezza che va diffondendosi trai cittadini greci riguardo le proprie prospettive finanziarie limiterà fortemente i flussi turistici interni nel corso del 2011, a fronte delle più rosee previsioni riguardanti gli arrivi dall´estero.
Nel corso del 2010, il turismo interno a subito cali del 5,3 per cento nella parte iniziale dell´anno, del 12,3 p.c. nel corso della stagione estiva e dell´11,3 per cento durante la stagione invernale; nel 2009 erano però stati gli stessi turisti ellenici ad aver favorito la crescita del settore: nel corso di quell´anno, il numero di pernottamenti in alberghi e campeggi era cresciuto dello 0,6 per cento, con una crescita complessiva del 9,6 per cento nel numero di turisti ellenici, contro un calo del 2,7 per cento di quelli stranieri.
