In an unprecedented move, both ruling socialist PASOK and the main conservative opposition, New Democracy, on Monday called for the indictment of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who has been accused of accepting bribes in order to approve a submarine procurement deal.
The parliamentary committee investigating the purchase of four German submarines by the Hellenic Navy a decade ago issued a unanimous decision for the ex-minister to be indicted on criminal charges of bribe taking at the expense of the state and money laundering.
The committee comprised members of all parties represented in Parliament apart from the far-right Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS). Opposition deputies called for Tsochatzopoulos to be indicted on other charges including breach of faith and violating state secrets.
Most MPs on the committee also called for the former minister to be ordered to provide financial compensation to the state.
The committee submitted its report to Parliament, where it is to be perused by the plenary session within the next two weeks.
In an interview with Skai Television’s “New Folders” program last night, the ex-minister once again denied any wrongdoing, rebuffed allegations linking his assets to offshore companies and claimed that the parliamentary investigation was “full of holes.” Tsochatzopoulos conceded, however, that the submarine deal had involved “middlemen who took kickbacks.”
He reiterated calls for the parliamentary committee probing the affair to summon all the members of the political and military council that approved the deal, including current Prime Minister George Papandreou, who was then foreign minister, and former Premier Costas Simitis, to give evidence.
Only with their testimony will the matter be cleared up, Tsochatzopoulos maintained.

The leader of the main conservative opposition New Democracy, Antonis Samaras, is on Monday to begin a series of meetings in Paris and Brussels with European politicians in a bid to win support for a renegotiation of Greece’s loan agreement with its creditors.
Samaras wants Greece’s memorandum to include certain tax reductions instead of the foreseen tax hikes and is proposing a renegotiation along the lines of deals reached by Portugal and Ireland with their international creditors.
The ND leader is to meet French Prime Minister Francois Fillon on Tuesday and has scheduled talks on Wednesday with Wilfried Martens, former Belgian prime minister and the president of the European People’s Party.
Samaras is to round off his visit by meeting with Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission.

spread sotto i 1300

Grecia 1298 pb. (1311)
Irlanda 780 pb. (773)
Portogallo 705 pb. (707)
Spagna 225 pb. (218)
Italia 165 pb. (158)
Belgio 108 pb. (100)

Ciao, Giuseppe

Premier seeks to unify party behind reforms

PM seeks to overcome party rifts on midterm program amid reports of referendum

Prime Minister George Papandreou on Monday sought to overcome reported rifts between ministers and get his Cabinet behind the government’s midterm program, which is to be submitted in Parliament by the end of this week, as speculation mounted about the measures being put to a referendum.
The premier reportedly ruled out the prospect of early elections - which has been the subject of feverish speculation - and made it clear that the current priority was approving the program which is to go to Parliament in the form of one bill despite calls by some MPs for it to be broken down into separate articles.
According to sources, the prospect of some of the proposed reforms being put to a referendum was not ruled out by the PM.
The program - which outlines a new raft of austerity measures including tax increases and drastic cuts to public spending - is be discussed over the next two days by the party’s political council and other party organs where opposition is expected to be more vehement.
Already several MPs of socialist PASOK have said they intend to vote against the bill.
According to sources, the voices of dissent have multiplied since last Thursday when a group of PASOK deputies sent a letter to Papandreou asking for the midterm program to be thoroughly debated before being voted on in Parliament.
Greece’s international creditors are not so keen on lengthy discussions; they want the program pushed through Parliament as soon as possible so that its implementation can begin.
As Papandreou seeks to win internal support for his government’s economic program, the leader of the main conservative opposition New Democracy, Antonis Samaras, is seeking to woo European politicians in a bid to gain support for the renegotiation of Greece’s loan agreement with its creditors.
Samaras wants Greece’s memorandum to include tax reductions, not hikes, and is proposing a renegotiation along the lines of deals reached by Portugal and Ireland with their international creditors.
The ND leader is on Tuesday to meet French Prime Minister Francois Fillon in Paris before traveling to Brussels on Wednesday for talks with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
Smaller opposition groups were seeking alliances closer to home. The head of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), Alexis Tsipras, invited the Communist Party (KKE) to join a broader leftist coalition. There had been no response from KKE by late Monday.

Debt rollover idea gaining support

ECB officials admit that plan may include investors buying new bonds and replacing old ones
dot_clear.gif
European Central Bank Governing Council member Nout Wellink said a debt rollover may form part of a new aid package for Greece as the Frankfurt-based lender remained firmly against any restructuring of the country’s massive debt load.
“I don’t rule out that a part of the additional refinancing can come from that source,” Wellink said in Amsterdam on Monday.
Responding to a panelist’s comment on encouraging investors to buy new bonds to replace maturing ones, he said that “there are options that can work, we have seen that with the Vienna initiative some years ago.”
Policymakers are mulling the idea of bond rollovers as a pillar of any new aid package.
The step would be favored by the ECB, two officials familiar with the situation told Bloomberg, as it would reduce the risk of any agreement being classified as a default.
Investors may be given preferred status, higher coupon payments or collateral, according to two other European Union officials familiar with the situation.
EU leaders are due to meet in Brussels on June 23-24 to approve a plan.
Wellink also reaffirmed his opposition to a Greek debt restructuring, saying it could lead to “contagion with regard to Ireland and Portugal.”
His comments come as ECB Executive Board member Lorenzo Bini Smaghi described a sovereign debt restructuring as being an option of “last resort” as it may have “severe implications” on the country and investors.
“More often than not, restructurings have been disorderly, harmful and fraught with difficulties,” Bini Smaghi said in Berlin on Monday.
“Imposing haircuts on private investors can seriously disrupt the financial and real economy of both the debtor and creditor countries” and “this is why such restructuring should only be the last resort.”
ECB Vice President Vitor Constancio said in Fiesole, Italy, that “we have to be very careful in analyzing” the various options for Greece. There are “several possibilities” and “some of them we may refuse,” he said.
The ECB faces losses of up to 66 billion euros on the government bonds it has purchased and the collateral it is holding from Greek banks if the country restructured half of its debt, according to research group Open Europe. The ECB has an exposure of about 190 billion euros to Greek assets, it added.

Grecia, voto su austerity entro fine giugno - funzionario governo

PM says country's default avoided

"We do not accept and we never accepted the logic of commissioners," Papandreou stressed, adding that "we do not accept anything that will decrease our dignity, our basic sovereign rights, whether it is the vote, or the commissioners or whatever attitudes or demands of a similar character."
