EU Barroso: Hopes To See New Greek Government Approved Rapidly
BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso urged Greek parties to quickly approve a new government "so that the process for continuation of financial assistance to Greece may continue smoothly."
In remarks made Friday, Barroso also said he is looking to Sunday's meeting of euro-zone finance ministers to come up with a "responsible" agreement on financial assistance to Greece.
However, Barroso said the onus remained on Greece's politicians to show that they are prepared to deliver on their commitments.
"Of course, the first condition to have success...is that Greece wants that support and that Greece is able to deliver on its part," he said. "It is critically important that the signals coming from Greece are clear about that."
Earlier Friday, Greece's government announced a sweeping cabinet reshuffle following two days of dramatic developments that included mass protests on the streets of Athens and several high-profile defections from the ruling party.
Greece's parliament is expected to hold a confidence vote on the new government early next week.
