Greek Government And Opposition Lost In Translation

There is a debate going on about the interview of the Greek Prime Minister to the Financial Times Deutschland, as the government officials attempt to explain what happened regarding the statement by George Papandreou on a possible default.

According to officials, the Prime Minister spoke of a “selective default”, but the newspaper render the phrase as “default” without specifying that it would be related to bonds.

The issue of this wording was raised at the cabinet meeting on Thursday, as government members asked whether the Prime Minister could use a word that does not cause panic. According to sources, FinMin Evangelos Venizelos explained the technical meaning of the term.

Yesterday’s interventions by Papandreou and Venizelos reflect a double attempt. Firstly, to show that the government confronts its European partners to provide an immediate solution after the pre-required adoption of medium-term fiscal plan. Secondly, to calm Greek people that a “selective default” is not an actual default and press the opposition by speaking of “composure, alertness and unity”.

But, the opposition leader Antonis Samaras replied that “a year ago we were imposed a dilemma of “Memorandum or default”, and when the MoU failed, they raised a new dilemma of “medium-term or default”. Now, they speak of a selective default or a suspension of payments”.

In the House, an incident occurred between FinMin Venizelos and opposition party New Democracy MPs, on the occasion of a minister’s statement that the opposition should assist the government “by military discipline”, although he clarified that it was a “figure of speech”.
