Eurozone Govts Consider Bank Levy For Rescue Of Greece: Press
BERLIN (MNI) - Eurozone governments are considering introducing a bank levy in order to involve private creditors in the planned new fiscal aid program for Greece, the German daily Die Welt reported Monday, citing senior EU diplomatic sources.
According to the paper, the bank levy is to be also valid for financial institutions in the Eurozone that are not directly engaged in Greece.
The International Monetary Fund is getting increasingly angry about the crisis management of Eurozone governments, Die Welt wrote. Influential circles in the IMF would like the Fund not to engage itself further in Greece, the paper said. "Many people in the IMF have had enough," Die Welt cited a EU diplomatic sources as saying.
Inside the German government a power struggle is going on between the Chancellery and the Finance Ministry about the right strategy in the debt crisis, the paper wrote. While the ministry favors a haircut on Greek debt, the Chancellery is strictly opposed. Advisers of Chancellor Angela Merkel fear that a haircut would have a contagious effect on other indebted Eurozone states, Die Welt said.
