Greece asked EU/IMF at Ecofin to restructure debt-paper

ATHENS, April 18 (Reuters) - Greece told the IMF and the European Union earlier this month that it wants to restructure its debt and discussions on the issue are expected to start in June, Greek daily Eleftherotypia said on Monday.
Media reports that the overborrowed country is seeking a debt restructuring have been dismissed by Greece's finance minister and top EU and IMF officials.
"The government's request was conveyed by Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou at the informal Ecofin meeting of finance ministers in Hungary earlier in April," the paper said, adding that all reports on the issue have been dismissed by officials because such moves are never pre-announced.
The paper said U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is also in favour of stretching out repayments of Greece's debt.
"You have to do it, he told Papaconstantinou," the paper said.
Greek finance ministry officials were not immediately available for comment.
Despite repeated denials by Greece, the first euro zone country to seek a bailout from richer members, market jitters over a debt restructuring have driven yield spreads of Greek government bonds over German Bunds to record highs.
Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou told Reuters Insider at the weekend that a restructuring is not on the cards.

buongiorno Peco, condivido il tuo parere: è importante che i cittadini greci capiscano la necessità della manovra finanziaria in arrivo e continuino a sostenere il partito che li sta guidando in questa dura prova di ristrutturazione della grecia. L'essenziale è che con queste nuove misure e con le privatizzazioni, si possa rientrare nei paramentri stabiliti e che la troika, che sta controllando in questi giorni i conti economici, dia un giudizio positivo di tale manovra. Ricordiamoci infatti, che l'ultimo giudizio della troika di circa tre mesi fa, giudizio di scarsa sufficienza e che aveva lamentato la necessità di incassi di circa 50ml sulle privatizzazioni, aveva dato inizio alla nuova discesa dei ggb e di conseguenza aveva alimentato le voci di una futura ristrutturazione del debito.

"This is not true. The minister exhausted the issue yesterday," said the official, who declined to be named, referring to repeated denials by Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou over the weekend.
