E.Venizelos: Voting With Increased Majority Possible
The new loan agreement could be voted with an increased majority of 180 votes, according to Greek FinMin Evangelos Venizelos, despite the fact that the government spokesman Elias Mossialos said last week “we want consensus, but we do not raise the issue of 180 votes”.
Venizelos, also Deputy Prime Minister was asked by ruling party members at a meeting to adopt a stance on the issue. Sources note that he declined to answer directly but he raised the “rhetorical” question whether the government could advance without allies and how long it could handle. He said that the issue of 180 votes has not been discussed at the cabinet, an answer that was interpreted as an attempt to leave the matter open and send the Prime Minister a message that major decisions should be taken collectively.
The issue of increased majority is of crucial importance as it would either force main opposition party to consent or lead to early elections.
The FinMin had suggested an increased majority for the approval of the MoU in May 2010 and for the adoption of the medium-term program two weeks ago. In both cases, the proposal was not accepted by George Papandreou.
